In many countries they do that. Also they do stamp and state the number of days they can stay legally. I think it helps both parties if there is a stamp.

Japan is a stickler for detail and has exit controls to boot (and so are a few other places like Thailand where overstayers are regularly nailed). FWIW, took a cruise that ended in a small Japanese sea port with only ~70 pax onboard. Japanese immigration were set up in the terminal (a very unattractive former warehouse). 6 officers took close to an hour to process the 70 pax. Painfully slow.

Certainly would be helpful as there's no ambiguity or misunderstandings due to poor handwriting. Just wondering how old, country of citizenship and purpose of visit of the person was? If it's to visit immediate family, and of an age unlikely to be seeking employment/being a public burden, there may be less concern about overstaying. This has certainly been observed in Trip Advisor forums.
