I've read that nearly 25% of the TSA workforce is ex-military.

Would TSA have issues with old fashioned fountain pens? The kind using liquid ink refills? I generally use these types of pens. Should I just place it in the clear zipper Baggie?

I've hired a lot of ex-military in my role, as manager in a highly technical field, and in my experience about 50% of the ones I interview are just looking for "easy" coasting money to supplement their military "retirement" pay.

I'd imagine in a federal agency, with their preferential points and less discretion on hiring, that figure is even higher.

It depends on how much liquid is in it.

I'm sure they won't have any trouble with the pen. A pen is a pen.

However, if you have a BOTTLE of ink, that will have to go in your 3-1-1 bag, and it will have to be less than 100ml/3.4oz.

Please. These are the same Mensa students that confiscate 0.5" plastic doll guns, pictures of things, and cupcakes. The only saving grace is the morons that would confiscate a fountain pen are probably so stupid they wouldn't know that's what it was.

No, a fountain pen would be no problem coming through. The amount of liquid in a "normal" fountain pen would be far below the 3.4 oz amount (I say normal, becuase I have seen some gag fountain pens that were like 3 feet long, those would have some problem coming through!). Just leave it where you normally keep it.

But, the pen is mightier than the sword. The sword is a weapon, therefore the pen is an ultra-weapon and therefore prohibited.

An honest question: how is that officially verified? There's no label on it indicating the volume, right?

But if a screening clerk decided to confiscate the pen from a citizen on the grounds that it contained liquid not contained in a magical plastic baggie that protects us all from an imaginary threat, that citizen would of course have no recourse to retrieve his of her property, correct?

Actually, if some idiot screener decided to steal a pretty fountain pen, the owner of said pen WOULD have a simple recourse - he could empty the liquid ink out of the pen into the trash can and continue on with the empty pen in hand, just as someone with a bottle of water has the option of pouring out the water and continuing on with the empty bottle.

Given the nature of this issue, however, the idea that a screener would ever see any difference between a fountain pen and a disposable ballpoint is Ludacris. Pen is pen. Pen allowed. Grunt, grunt. You have water? Water not allowed! Grunt! WATER! NOT! ALLOWED! GRUNT!

My very nice pen will travel in luxurious accommodations in the zip lock baggie.
