However, later the same day I also requested the credit by Secure Message (for "baggage fees) and it was approved. Very YMMV now but still doable. 2/10/2017

Southwest Airlines GCs work fairly easily. I've generally bought them for $150 and said they're excess baggage fees.

I stayed there this past weekend with my free nights. I emailed the hotel directly a week before and upgraded to a ocean view fire pit room for an extra $220/night. There were some other upgrade options too, but this was the nicest.

Valet parking and the resort fee do add up though.

75k spend for platinum calendar year?

I've put 75 k on the card for Ritz, Marriott and SPG plat and United Silver.. I was told three weeks ago I'd reached that level and would have to possibly wait 6 weeks to see the change. She was basing the spend and qualification on a calendar year which was my understanding.

Today I followed up to check progress and the cc agent tells me it's based on my anniversary in Feb. First I've heard that and twice I've heard the other way around.

Which is it? If anniversary I'm going to be pissed, have a bunch of SPG and Ritz travel planned, hoping for some good upgrades

But if your anniversary date was in Feb, then it won't really matter much either way as it is only 1 month difference. Unless I guess you spent a lot of the 75K in January this year.

That January spend was about $20k so it's a setback big time

It is account year - and pretty explicit in the terms:

Platinum Elite Status:
Each account anniversary year you make Net Purchases totaling $75,000 or more you will qualify for Platinum Elite Status through December 31 of the following year. "Account anniversary year" means the year beginning with your account open date through the anniversary of your account open date, and each 12 months after that.

Seems like it. I'm assuming you'd have to spend 75k in less than one month to getstatus for roughly 10 months. That's BS. Looks like I'm ok, thought I'd spent a lot in January but not the case. I must have known the rule then, then my feeble mind forgot...

Not at all. The status will be granted when you meet the spending. So just meet it in January and you get almost 2 years of status. Meet it in December and you get a a little more than year of status. All pretty fair.

That is way when you get a card is also strategically important.

Ok understood. I apparently did not do my due diligence before applying. My wife got it late in year and three nights free. I can't recall her anniversary, about October. Would she get all of 2018 and 2019 if she spent 75k this year(aside from time from spend completion to showing status)? Was going to cancel hers but now wondering......

It is BS. It gets you status through Dec 31 of the next calendar year, which is pointless. I only used the card to get Gold status automatically so I could take a platinum challenge and get platinum before earning it. I have been Platinum since without the spend. I am going to product change the card to Freedom Unlimited I think. Is that possible?

It's not fair though. Meeting the minimum spend in 1 month (Dec to January) is nearly impossible...75k spend is a ton for 1 month. Consider the following scenarios:

Scenario 1 - Card opened Jan 10
Minimum spend met Dec 10
Platinum status given Dec 10* (roughly)
Platinum status good through Dec 31 the NEXT year (13 months later)

Scenario 2 - Card opened Dec 10
Minimum spend met Nov 10
Platinum status given Nov 10* (roughly)
Platinum status good through Dec 31 the SAME year (2 months later)

That is a big difference.

If spend the 75K before the anniversary date (Oct 2017), you'll get the status from the point you met the spend in 2017, and for all 2018. In order to keep it to 2019, you'll have to spend the 75K from your anniversary date (Oct 2017) and finish it early in 2018.

You are wrong about Scenario 2 - the card year only matter for the spending requirement. The status works on a calendar year. So in your scenario 2 - you are given Platinum status for 14 months (the entire rest of the year + the next year).

In the end this benefit is intended to encourage repeated use. For the intended customers, who do use it repeatedly, it does not matter, as you'll gain another status for the next year. While this is not what we do here, that is the intention.

Only options are to cancel card or product change to Marriott card, from my understanding. I've read about many DP's of people changing to Marriott card. Since it's a hotel branded card, can't actually product change Ritz to a full on Chase product ie: Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, Sapphire, etc

Well I will change it to Marriott then. I have the Marriott Business card though. It wouldn't be terrible to get 15 more free nights, if that occurs (unclear and reports that it stops at 15 total and that it goes 30)
