I made the same switch a few months back, so I have seen it on my report and can verify that the age stays the same.

Thank goodness!

Thanks

Do you call Chase to do this or PM them? Anyone know if there is a chance to get the 10k UR points by making the conversion?

You can do this via Secure Message as well but highly doubt that will you get any sort of signup bonus for the conversion

I asked if I could get the 10K bonus. He told me I would have to apply for a new Freedom account to get that. I opted to switch the slate over because it is about 11 years old account.

Yeah, in that case the age is more important then a measly 10K points. (depending on credit profile of course)

For a product change (no applying or canceling, or moving credit lines) do I call the Recon line? Or just the regular Chase customer service number on the back of my card?

Just call the number on the back of your card.

I would definitely call the number on the back of your card, just make sure you don't call the United MP number because that's on there, too!

I sent a SMS message to Chase on the 26th and it took three days to get a reply. They responded to my request to change card products only to tell me that I must wait 12 months 1 day or longer before requesting a product change. I'm traveling a bit more now, so I'm going to convert from the Explorer card to the Club. My account was opened on 7/5 last year, so I'm just shy. She offered an alternative which was to apply for the Club Card, but I don't want or need another line of credit, so I'll just wait the remaining few days.

Thanks. I was wondering, is upgrading/product change from Explorer to the Club AFTER 12 months 1 day going to be a hard inquiry? on TOBB, people have been stating it will be hard, while some say product changes should be soft. There has been small debates about this, yet I have not seen a single data point =( only talk...

I wonder why a credit pull would even be necessary in the first place? The credit line has already been established, so you'd think they would make it as painless as possible to convert. My wife switched from the Citibank HHonors Visa to the HHonors Reserve and there was no pull. She received an offer to upgrade, she called the number, and they mailed the card out the next business day. Two years ago when I switched my Chase Slate card to the CSP card, it was all handled via online SMS. Again, no pull there either.

I think you're right. I just Tweeted Chase (yes, I Tweeted) and they said the product change does NOT require a hard credit pull. In the past when people have upgraded from the Explorer to the Club, some have gotten the increase line of credit in which THAT is a hard pull. I think this is the confusion where a lot of people have said why it is a hard pull. So make sure when you upgrade/product change, tell them you want the same credit line with no increase.

Another question, how did you product change from the Slate to CSP? I thought only Slate to Freedom was allowed. This means you didn't get the CSP sign up bonus, right?

JaysonW Jul 1, 2013 9:09 pm

Let's see, I believe I upgraded from the Slate to CSP in September 2011.

My Slate card was actually a First USA card, then a Bank One Visa, and finally a Chase Slate card as the banks merged in the early to mid 2000s. It had a $25k limit on it at the time and they saw I barely used the card. I told them I wanted a card with rewards, which was when the rep gave a me a list of like six cards to choose from. I had never had a card with an AF before so choosing the CSP was an 'expensive' choice for me. (I liked the transfer of points to airlines, so I went CSP)

From what I understand, switching to the CSP is rare if not impossible to do nowadays. Perhaps seeing that the account had been open for 10 years had something to do with it.

Thanks for Tweeting Chase about the pull. (I have yet to set up a Twitter account)

SuperKirby Jul 1, 2013 9:17 pm

@JaysonW, thanks for the info, and no problem. Chase's Tweet response was quick! Oh yeah, no CSP sign up bonus, right?

PainCorp Jul 2, 2013 5:55 pm

Has anyone had any luck downgrading from say the MPE to Freedom? I know you used to be able to do it, but Chase told me that they don't do this anymore...which seems like a stupid business decision.
