I know, but the people I meet either:

a) don't have payme; or

b) (before today) tell me not to waste their cash-out quotas and pay them by hsbc easy pay/BoC small value transfer instead

Same observation at hongkongcard https://forum.hongkongcard.com/forum...w/22473?page=4 #34 . But I don't believe something as blindingly obvious can be hidden - it can be seen as a sign-up bonus to be leeched as much as allowed.

Then again I don't really see much of a viable model for P2P here. Too much cash, Octopus, ATMs and bank branches.

Thanks, percy. Is there a specific way in which you take into account the fact that redemption awards are harder to come by these days? I recall reading that this was one of the main factors driving your devaluation from HK$0.08-->0.06

Call me naive, but I originally thought this might work in HK. There is a big dining out culture here, and there was never really an app that allowed people to pay others easily in exact numbers without having to fumble around with cash/coins, etc. Being a frequent visitor to the US, seeing how popular and easy Venmo was to use, I would have thought this should have been something HSBC or another big bank could have developed easily.

But the execution of payme has been quite poor I have to say. It's difficult to add "friends", the payment mechanism relies on a messaging app rather than in-app contact, not being able to do direct bank transfers without relying on your payme balance, and the limits they put on how many bank accounts you can link, withdrawals, etc. all just serve to make it more difficult for people to increase adoption. Even the name itself doesn't quite make sense...the primary purpose should be using the app to transfer payments to others, not request money from your friends!

It's all a bit disappointing, and I think indicative of big consumer bank "culture" in HK in general (say nothing of HSBC in particular). I hope there's another start-up type player out there who can develop something easier and more convenient.

Payme copies a lot of Venmo's features.

We haven't fully eliminated cash. We still need cash for taxis, local businesses (my laundry), even some eateries.

Oh. Even funeral wreaths. My mother sent one on my behalf to the funeral of a great uncle of mine. It wasn't just because the florist insisted on cash - mother insisted I pay her back in cash specifically for the wreath instead of letting me settle $400 of her credit card bill (my makeshift way of P2P-ing my mother when asked to pay her). Tradition thing.

Well sending a payment message from Payme isn't that hard...

Here's the kicker with all these new P2P apps in HK - while withdrawing is relatively easy, topping up an account requires 2-factor authorisation. And 2-factor involves a physical token with many banks (too much work for most people - here's some cash).

Well you only need to link one bank account (preferably HSBC cos its instant) (but if you have HSBC why not Easy Pay in lieu?)

Someone already took Payyou/Payou?

(I understand Venmo is partly funded by merchants paying Venmo for accepting its payments https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/a...s-killing-cash )

Payme can't replicate that here - a hard part is Octopus is too ubiquitous - through no unfair practice of its own, but due to network effect.

I reviewed how I managed to burn my miles acquired in 2016 at $0.08 cost. The answer is I'm buying far more than CX is allowing me to burn so I'm cutting back on acquisitions for 2017.

I just suggested to a friend that we shouldn't acquire more than what we can expect to burn in the next 12 (or maximum 18) months. I've more than 12 right now.

Everyone must have different valuation of Asia Miles, there is not one right answer. Mine is on the higher-end because 1) most of my redemptions are for long-haul business class tickets, 2) I have kids, and most importantly 3) I can redeem the miles given my Marco Polo status

I'm looking forward to iOS 11 - sending money to friends via Apple Pay, then cashing it into bank accounts ...

This is truly YMMV - since there're anti-trade rules in place, it's not like those with low valuations like me can easily sell to high-valuation AM members like you

Why do I think HK will be one of those "everywhere but HK" markets again https://www.macrumors.com/2016/09/16...ges-hong-kong/ ?

What does YMMV mean, Percy? But you are exactly right. I learned from this forum that AM/CX is really cracking down on people redeeming miles for non family/friends. They are clearly not believers in the free market!

Octopus readers now $168 (down from $228)

http://www.octopus.com.hk/octopus-mo.../en/index.html

But https://forum.hongkongcard.com/forum...w/22133?page=5 #49 says iOS11 may support oepay natively

qn is how prevalent the oepay scheme is?
i doubt it is that prevalent, especially with the 50bps fee charged on withdrawals.
and it is very troublesome to doot your 4(6) cards everyday (for a relatively small daily transaction amount per card).
i guess the pertinent question is how much $ does oepay pay the banks in interchange, and how much they buy points for...

the death knell for payme was it was doable in large amounts, and without any fee.
