Cathay reviewing herringbone J?

I had a phone call today (either from CX or their market research firm) asking me about my flights in CX's J class with specific reference to the herringbone design.

The lady asked me my height, weight, and size across the shoulders! They were looking for a variety of people to discuss the seats from the point of view of width, communicating with adjacent family, etc.

This is interesting given that CX management seemed to find comments relating to the width of the seat etc not hugely worthy of further research when the seats first came out. Perhaps the recession is prompting a re-think?

i don't think anything significant can be changed given that they have already retrofited half of their fleet

I know. Why wait this long if they were worried? Perhaps they want to find out more about who is disatisfied and why. I wonder if it is too late?

Maybe they were checking whether your shoulders were only 40cm wide so that they could get more data points to justify their design?

I'm a fairly "big" person (not huge, mind you) and I don't see what all the big fuss is about. I've travelled in all the different types of J that Cathay has had over the last 10 years or so and honestly, I prefer the new J over the old J.

Yes, the old J has more width in the seat, but if I had to sacrifice a completely flat bed for some more shoulder width, there's no way I would do that.

In the old J I still had trouble sleeping due to the incline and in the new J, I sleep like a log.

People are kind of beating this issue to death but it's always those who are dissatisfied who make a louder noise than those who are satisfied. If the new J is really that uncomfortable, then there's always F.

Given a choice, I would fly on new J any day for long haul. For daytime short haul, perhaps I would prefer the old J, but that's not what this seat caters to anyway.

Amen. Agree completely.

+0.9.

I actually can sleep pretty well on the angled flat seat, drug-induced of course. The main reason I prefer the herringbone is due to the privacy and not having a seatmate to have to share a drink tray or armrest/console with.

i think is possible for CX to modify the middle seats and open the divder up. by all mean they are working to find a way to fit our needs, nothing too late.

Do you mean the so called "double beds" of virgin mentioned in another thread?

I think it is quite hard to improve their new J apart from doing the double beds unless they reposition all their seats (maybe creating more width?) Their NJ isn't really that bad, and even if they don't change sth, people would still fly with CX:D

Agree with midlevels totally. Flew HKGMEL last night and slept seven hours - I could never do that with the old JCL. As I've said previously, if CX had asked me before implementing the new JCL what I wanted I would have said privacy and flat and they've certainly delivered on both.

I think CX's biggest problem is for onward bookings, not O+D to HKG. Then, they are up against SQ and other new designs that are much more comfortable in C.

tfung Apr 30, 2009 9:41 pm

There's nothing wrong with the herringbone design.. its just the way CX implemented it... If people actually try the herringbone seats on other airlines like AC, VS, NZ, 9W, etc... they will see the other implementations are much better than the CX one...

To sleep in, they are fit for that purpose and are quite comfortable. I just hate the direction they face in and the feed-lot feel to them.
