Hmm just to find out more about your experiences...
If 2 travellers are booked in the same booking record, and one of them holds a status, say GO, while the other doesn't (or holding a lower status, say GR). When there is a op up for the flight and all GO members got op up with 1 vacancy left... will the GO member in this case get upgraded? Or both of them? or none?
Sorry if it sounds like a maths sum, but just wanna find out how CX deals with op ups when members are found in a PNR with more than 1 travellers.

It depends....
But CX would generally consider both parties together as one booking and the GO's status would be the one that will determine the Op-up.
It is not always the same though, so don't take my word as official.

i've experienced both cases, CX either op-up both, or contact you (the famous message at the service desk) saying that there is only 1 seat left, do you want to take it as the biz class is full. (Y-J op-up). The of course the option is yours....

* I am aware of a MPC SL travelling with a passenger with no status, and both get op-upped. So you do not even need to be GO.
* I got op-upped with my travel companion (no status). We were on different records. We just showed up together at the airport. CX already identified me for op-up at check-in, but they also op-upped my companion. So it is not required to be on the same record locator.

My experience on this is port dependent. In HKG there seems to be the flexiblility for agents to op-up companions by calling flight control. Whilst at outports like KUL, LHR, for example, they do it strictly by hierarchy and companions have to join the op-up queue as individuals.

I had a case when travelling with someone on a separate booking. I was Diamond, he was Gold. We checked in at BKK together and the agent said that they would upgrade me but they weren't upgrading Golds yet. He said I could take the upgrade and take the chance that my friend would also get upgraded or not. So I took it, and in the end in the lounge we were told my friend got upgraded also, but we weren't sitting together.

Well I had two situations EX-HKG both first week of January, with high loads of student traffic. 2008, both me (AA Plt and CX SL) and my mom (CX SL) were upgraded, separate ticket. But in 2009, me (AA Plt and CX GO)travelling alone was upgraded but I noticed a family of 3, one of whom was CX GO was upgraded. So I dont know but I feel that lately CX been doing it by status, although the op-priority has switched between the time period of my two experiences.

That was at KIX. And I'm quite sure I've used up all my op-up karma, and more, from CX based on that unlikely confluence of events, right?

If CX going to op-up passengers at check in.
Staff's check system will show eligible member type and quota for upgrade.
For example message CX 466 HKG-TPE 5 seats available for GOLD card above.
