one world not always

I have just had to take some of my wife's baggage off her at heathrow 8kg. She flew over to LHR on CX and back on BA,on the way over got the extra baggage allowance Gold card and BA refused any more than her J 30kg. Does anyone know what the rules are as I have never had a problem?

Oneworld benefits do not include extra baggage allowance on OW airline (except if your home airline gives you benefits when flying them).

See this thread where I posted my friend's experience:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...hlight=Baggage

I noticed on CX's website, they now make a note of stating that extra baggage allowances do not apply to onward connections:

Was she not offered an opportunity to pay for the excess baggage?

What a coincidence I was just about to start a thread about this. CX always tag my business priority even if I'm in Y which is a MP benefit not OW. Just wondering if I am in J what are the chances that CX will extend there gold MP baggage weight to me?

thanks

Anecdotally I think CX will generally be quite lenient to J pax assuming you have less than 10kg over the limit. But I don't know if there is a hard and fast rule.

Well on my last 2 J trips on CX I did have a problem - leaving the USA they were fine both times however it's the HKG check-in both times that nailed me and they were not lenient at all. Matter of fact on the last trip I ended up throwing away a pair of shoes to lighten the load and I thought the CX Agent was going to pass out when I did this (the shoes were old) Part of my problem is my luggage already without anything in it tends to be heavy on it's own so does not take much to put it over their limit.

This is a constant problem on Oneworld yet they refuse to change the policy (or to match Star in offering this benefit). I suppose it will never change at this point, perhaps because AA doesn't offer it as a benefit (but then all AA issued tickets have a minimum of 46kg weight allowance, so in a sense they offer it to all pax, not just with status).

Presumably this was on separate tickets. If on the same ticket as used from US, the US limit of 2 pieces applies to all segments of your trip (and I've never seen an agent make a mistake about this).

i think it depends on the check in agent? (im not talking about the MPC benifits here)
I never had a problem with luggage <25kg(20+5 buffer?) (regardless to status) and I even had once checking in a 20kg and a 10 with a little bit of scruffy looking and begging and having 0 status, of course.
Whilst a friend had to pack like 8kg out on a 28kg bag (hence 20kg strict)
both happened in LHR...
That's Y,btw.

I just had the same experience. Very nice in my book. I just can't say enough about CX's service.

HKG seems to be particularly strict on baggage allowance from what I have heard I guess I will try my luck with 35kgs I'll be checking in in SGN.

Is there any reason why the Americas are on the piece system which is alot more generous and the ROW is on the weight system

In my experience, I think HKG is more lenient, but then I am Gold travelling on CX.

Out of interest, how heavy was your luggage before you adjusted it?

My impression is also that it is not just the weight of the luggage that affects the check in agents attitude, but the perception of how big it is. I have seen more people standing at checkin arguing with checkin staff with lots of boxes with masking tape, and beaten up luggage, than people with large, neat suitcases.

Seems that BA recently has a new baggage policy. 23 kg for check-in.. So, OW privileges no longer apply. Avoid BA. Stick to CX.

There are no OW baggage allowances.

BA don't offer increased baggage allowance as a benefit either, nor do they offer priority baggage.

I think only QF and CX offer both priority baggage and increased allowances within OW and generally offer it to OW elites out of courtesy. One however should never expect it as it is not a defined benefit of OW - CX and QF staff offering the benefit are doing so simply as a gesture of good will.
