Can you get avios points with Cathay Pacific?

I have just been reading this but I am sure that Cathay Pacific have their own miles scheme

Thank you for your reply , I have added Qatar to the Frequent flyer programme in my profile , Do i need to set up my Cathay account so that i get the Avios points, The website isn't telling me much or do i transfer the Asia miles to Avios at a later date

Hi,

Generally, you cannot transfer asia miles/ avios between programmes ( you can transfer avios between QR and BA however iirc)
If you have joined the QR FFP and used the number on your Cathay booking you will get QR points and Avios per the QR earning table.
You can then redeem your QR avios on flights etc ( ie cathay flights at a later date ) subject to availability.
I would check that QR would be the best programme for you going forward based on location/choice of airlines routes and flying patterns)

Thank you for your helpful reply, We have 55,000 Avios points with flying BA and Qatar over the last 2 years , It would make sense to fly with Qatar so i can add to my Avios , But with flights to BKK over �1100 (�1,184), it makes more sense to fly with Cathay for �700 which will be over �900 savings for 2 passengers.

So the way i understand it , During the booking process, I use my Qatar FFP number and not the Cathay number .

Maybe you can help me on this question to (Please) Do i need to set up an account for my wife with Cathay? She has a FFP with Qatar and also BA .

I am trying to set up my membership with Cathay correctly before booking the flights

malct no you do not need a CX account to either take a CX flight or credit miles from a CX flight to any other OW account

The benefits of having a CX account (which you must input the FFP# in the booking), from the top of my head, are:
- you can OLCI at T-48 instead of the T-24 available for non-members
- you can avail member-specifix promo codes, if you have them

else, depending on your fare class, you'll be fine with your QR FFP#

Not quite—Asia Miles and Avios are separate loyalty currencies, and they aren’t directly interchangeable between Cathay (Asia Miles) and Qatar Airways (Avios), even though both are part of the Oneworld alliance. We recommend reaching out directly to Qatar Airways for further assistance. Due to our frequent flyer programs is different

If you put in your Qatar programme number on a Cathay flight, the avios you can earn will be credited to your Qatar account automatically.
Amount of exact avios can be earned on a Cathay flight depends on the fare conditions, you shall be able to check this on Qatar website
If end up there is a missing avios, you can later submit your claim to Qatar with your boarding pass and ticket on missing avios, but not through Cathay as you have chosen to earn avios.

The fare Class on my flight is S and i am unable to claim Avios under Qatar and i have to link up BA after check in and not before or you loose the right for the 48 hour check in.

Hello malct.
You seem very confused while the issue is very simple.
When you fly CX, or any other OW airline, you do not need to open an account with CX.
Just book as a guest on CX website and enter your QR, BA or other FFP number.
You can earn avios using either a QR, BA or AY FFP. Other airlines (like CX FFP) use a different currency and you cannot transfer those to avios.
As you mention, S fare class does not earn any avios on QR FFP but it does on BA FFP.
As you can easily transfer avios between these three programs, I would suggest that you create a BA FFP and later transfer those avios to your QR FFP.

Both myself and my wife have a BA account and flew with them last year which was a nightmare after our first flight was cancelled from Glasgow to Heathrow and we missed our onward flight to Doha and we were transferred onto Thai air, luckily we claimed via the EU261, regards membership of Cathay, I am happy with joining with the perks of cancelling 24 hours before the flight and 48 hour online check in, so might get a decent seat free of charge. At the moment we are members of Emirates, Qatar, BA and now Cathay and we do make use of the points

Another reason for being a member of Cathay, if the price drops, you can phone them, cancel the flight and they will book you on the cheapest flight. I have that documented on a message from a Cathay agent via DM

Your initial question and title was about Avios.
I think that you got that extensively answered.
If you want the avios, use your BA. Whatever experiences you got on flying BA is irrelevant to that question as you won't be flying BA just crediting avios.

If you feel that the 24/48 hour rule is more important then use your new CX account although you will get no avios.
Personally, I can always check-in 48h before on CX, but it may be because I have status on BA FFP.

You can always do it by paying cancellation charge if your fare is cancellable.
Even if your fare is non-cancellable, you can still buy a new ticket on the same flight with cheaper fare without refunding the original ticket.
