Just an amusing encounter with CX at HKIA regarding this new policy
  • Kept my JL FFP on an Economy Light ticket throughout from booking to check-in. My OW status was recognized and I was able to book extra legroom seats, check-in additional bags and have priority check-in
  • My boarding pass was issued on day of flight with my JL FFP and lounge access was granted
  • A few minutes before boarding, I swapped the FFP from JL to CX, so that the miles will be accrued into AM
  • At the autogates in HKIA, my ticket was flagged (a loud red light) and I was pulled aside. Gate agent says that I have an unpaid extra legroom seat and check-in bag.
  • Basically told her in canto that she could just swap my FFP back to JL at the gate now so that the alert goes away, and I will swap it back to CX on the plane
  • Gate agent did a manual override and allowed me to board. I told her that CX corporate should remove this silly policy since it is not enforceable and it is wasting everyone’s time at the gate
  • Onboard, I checked my CX app and my CX FFP was retained. Gate agent had manually overrode the alert without changing anything

I think most CX staff know that there is not much they can do with elites who are savvy enough to use two separate FFPs for status and miles. They can go further to enforce this policy (like disabling FFP changes post check-in), but really goes to show the mindset behind CX executives in wanting their flyers to behave ;)

“I told her that CX corporate should remove this silly policy since it is not enforceable and it is wasting everyone’s time at the gate”

What’s so silly about it? Who’s wasting whose time?

Isn’t the whole point of this policy is to receive member benefits according to the FFP# on your booking? Extra legroom seat and extra bags are the benefits you get from your JL FFP. It helps to weed out gamers like you and protect the interests of genuine elite members.

Tbh if I were the gate agent I’d just charge you for the extra bag and move to you to a regular Y seat.

"Programs: BA GGL, CX Gold"

So I trust no Pier F for you? Or no CX Gold renewal for 2027?

Pick your poison - can't see why you're so happy about this.

I think we found the CX employee who put the new rules in.

Or maybe the airline shouldn't overengineer its program. If theres an arbitrage, I would be the dumb one to not trade it.

I have only just found out about the new rule that prevents you from changing from the CX FFP to the BA FFP after doing the on line check in so i contacted CX Via Twitter and they have told me the following

Thank you for providing the information. The verification has been completed.
Regarding your booking, your Cathay membership number has now been added. This means you can proceed with online check-in for your outbound flight within 48 hours before departure and assign your seat online.

If you would like to change the Frequent Flyer Number to your British Airways membership number, please inform the airport staff, and they will assist you in updating it. In this case, your Cathay membership will be removed from the booking and replaced with your BA membership number.

Furthermore, once your BA membership number is added for the return flight, you will only be able to complete online check-in within 24 hours before departure.

7:32 PM
Q. Will the staff at Manchester airport be able to complete this for me since most staff are not employed by Cathy and are agencie staff working for the airport

7:38 PM
A. Regards asking the airport staff, could I just contact Cathy pacific uk and ask them to link to BA for the avios points
7:45 PM

Rest assured, the staff will be able to assist you.
Please let them know that you would like to remove the Cathay membership number from the system and add your British Airways membership number to the booking. They will then update the details for you.

What defines a "genuine elite member" in your opinion? Compared to those who spend personal money to reach status, do you include those who have their companies pay for all their trips? What about those who do SP runs?

I personally think it's not so black and white

A recent data point from myself (01Dec25).

Flew from PVG to HKG on economy light (S) ticket via OTA. I added my QR emerald number to the booking, and pre-selected bulkhead seat. I also got all the OWE benefit on ground and onboard including First class check in and First Class priority tag, entering PVG CX lounge, the crew pre set the pillow, blanket and a Evian badge less water at my seat. The crew came to take my food order before take off, FP came by to say hi, my meal was delivered ahead of our passengers.

Out of curiosity, I tried to change my FFP number via CX app, right after aircraft pushback, from QR emerald to CX green and it succeeded. My app show I am Cathay green and prompted unpaid extra legroom seat for this PVG-HKG sector. After I refresh, when I try to change back to QR emerald, it shows error.

After 1 day, I did get my asiamiles and status point in my CX account.

Tried changing the FFP again, both before and after boarding.

Redemption ticket only, won’t have a paid ticket to try til Feb. 160- Cathay redemption

I decided to pay for seats 60 G and H and keep my BA FFP and gain Avios points on the Manchester to HK Leg rather than taking a chance on 24 hour check in. I am not too bothered on the next 3 legs ( HK to BKK and return from BKK to MAN Via HK since on the return is a night flight but going out from Manchester i don't think i will be sleeping too much and i want to enjoy the flight and the seat next to 60H is the extra leg room , So that person can get out via the gap in front of him. The leg from HK to BKK isn't a full flight , So plenty of choice on seats

How to change number via app? I booked via OTA and I still can’t change my FFP number via Cathay App.

Even during online check in, I cannot add my BA number so I can’t even choose bulkhead seat until I check in at HKIA.

is there any workaround for bookings via OTA?

Just as a reference note "for next time":

On booking: put in highest FFP expected at check in date. e.g. if I have a OWE now (but will lose by check in date) and a OWS that I expect to keep to check in date, put in the latter. Make seat assignments (and further seat assignments in case of equipment change) based on it.
If your status FFP will be lost by check in date then put that in, need to make an educated guess about equipment change. If not expected then put in OWE, if expected then maybe Cathay AM.
If no status, put in Cathay AM to enjoy 48 hour check in and seat assignment.

At check in desk, change to whatever FFP you want to enjoy lounge benefits/luggage benefits/status points crediting/redemption miles crediting (from 14/11, these all have to be the same).

Your OTA has to put it in?

But if your OTA doesn't support this/can't be arsed, you're SOL. One more way for CX to punish parnter elites who book with OTAs.

I had my non CX number. Tried to chnge back to CX number, can't. I asked chat agent and they still can't. if this is fraud prevention they should be willingly changing back to CX number. these policies are written by morons, and applied by moron agents to the strict wording and misses the whole aim of the exercise nothing but to inconvenience.

tboons Dec 20, 2025 5:39 pm

CX IT is full of morons. Their app is worse than BA, can't look for awards without logging in and the keypass things just doesn't work! And it has been bad for so long while SQ and even QR kept their app simple and easy to use. BA is even better.

Well, what's keeping you from walking to QR/SQ (schedule?) or HX/HB (benefits?).

Those who could've walked would've already done so. Those who're staying to complain can't.
