CX flight question
Hi,
I booked business redemption tiket below:
mar 6th, sub-hkg-can
mar 11th, can-hkg-sub
and I decided not to use the mar 11th can-hkg ticket because I plan to go to Macau from Guangzhou by riding bus.
Now my question is, can I do that? Do I need to inform cathay pacific if I don't use one of those ticket?

NO.
You cannot do this, unless you're okay with the HKG-SUB sector cancelling. (Put another way, you are PERMITTED do it, it's not like you'll be charged extra or the police will come after you....but your HKG-SUB sector will be invalidated.)
Whether you inform Cathay or not is irrelevant. If you skip a sector in the itinerary, the rest is cancelled.

Is it an Asia Miles redemption? If yes, you can pay the USD 100 or 10000 Asia Miles fee to change the ticket, and you may be refunded the China Airport Fee but you will have to pay the HK Departure Tax (roughly the same). If not, it depends on the rules of the airline program you used to redeem.

The reason is, I presume the OP bought SUB-CAN round trip award. That is a certain number of miles. To change the ticket, the agent will need to cancel the existing ticket (charging what you say), but cannot hold on to the award availability....at least not guaranteed. If the OP is GO or DM maybe with some kicking and screaming it can be achieved. But I don't think there is any guarantee if you cancel the round trip those segments he wants will be immediately available for one way award redemption. Don't they go back to revenue management?
IF the OP can do what is said above, then he/she will still owe the extra miles for two one ways (higher amount), instead of a round trip. Because CAN is not HKG! One way will be SUB-CAN and the other HKG-SUB. You can't just loophole your way to round trip award pricing for what are different city pairs. Otherwise everyone on this board would be utilizing the loophole left and right and round trip awards wouldn't exist.

How about change your ticket such that CAN-HKG and HKG-SUB will be on different dates so you can take Skypier to/from Macau, i.e., fly to HKG and take a ferry to Macau. You will still need to pay the surcharge difference and the change fee, assuming award is available.

Not really.... you'll need to cancel, and then change to SUB-CAN one way, and HKG-SUB another one way.
I don't think this is totally correct, since it implies all the OP needs to do to fix the problem is pay the difference. Correct me if wrong but I don't think he/she can do that so easily.

Oneway redemption of Mar 6 SUB-HKG-CAN and Mar 11 HKG-SUB is still available online now (it isn't the most popular routes) so dropping and adding may be safe for now. Must need phone call and can ask the agent to confirm availability before change. And must be a costly reissue. (I think a cancellation isn't needed to drop one sector/drop 2 then add 1?)
Since round trip award allows one open-jaw, it isn't an actual "loophole". I read the maths somewhere:

For CX/KA (which I assume this redemption is) it is generally guaranteed IME.
AM Ticketing must reissue within the operating carrier's rebooking window - only more of a problem when partners are involved (and QR in particular)
---
OP, for US$100 or 10,000 AM you can well pay for your way back to CAN from Macau. Don't suggest doing it unless you want to avoid a second PRC visa or something.

//I've changed a business class mileage ticket for 1000 AM only (changed destination), but like most have suggested it is probably not worth doing unless you really have to.

Not sure how recent your experience have been, what I believe the current rules are:
- 25USD/1000 AM to rebook a sector online, 40USD/4000 AM through all other channels ("changes of confirmed flight date or flight number, with the same itinerary, same airline, same cabin class and same ticket expiry date")
- For the "same itinerary" part, I wonder if another airport in the same city allowed (e.g. NRT/HND), thus your case? Even so, HKG and CAN isn't in the same city per airline definitions.
- 100USD/10000 AM to reissue for all other cases
Also 100USD might even be enough get you taxi from the border (Zhuhai) to CAN.
