Dropping of ANC as a refuelling stop

Here's some news about CX dropping ANC as a refuelling stop for the YYZ-HKG flights (flights stop at YVR instead). Seems that between CX and CI, it's costing ANC US$100k monthly in lost revenues.

I wonder if stopping at YVR will allow CX to pick up more passengers to go to HKG.

No. The YYZ-(YVR)-HKG flight is strictly for refuelling only. And maybe crew change. No traffic rights whatsoever between YYZ-YVR and YVR-HKG. For the winter, CX can fly HKG-YYZ nonstop anyway. Don't know what they plan to do in the summer.

Guy Betsy,

Is CX unaware of the revenue potential of dropping/picking up passengers between YYZ and YVR?

I think Air Canada has a virtual monopoly between YYZ and YVR. Some comptetion wouldn't be bad.

You mean between YYZ-YVR. CX had 2x daily YVR-HKG flights (currently only 2x daily on certain days). I am not sure what the weekly limits between Canada and HKG are (I believe 21x weekly).

Very nice indeed!

Perhaps we should say "currently not allowed". Let's hope the situation changes in the future.

I can see YYZ-YVR being allowed (since all pax orignated from Canada) but if it was YVR-YYZ with a flight originating from HKG, al pax will have to clear at YVR or the joining pax at YVR will have to pass through immigration at YYZ. Hardly a convenience.

Sadly, I think AC would be wise to fight tooth and nail to ensure that CX does not get cabotage rights on this route. Having recently completed my first AC flight (YVR-YYZ), I can see that AC would have very legitimate grounds to be worried about even minimal competition from CX. AC service and scheduling is, how to say, very relaaaaxed.

Canada: Great country.

Cathay Pacific: Praise them here.
Air Canada: Complain about them somewhere else.
