Read a recently published CAPA article that says:
"The third runway will open up a new wave of regional growth opportunities – at both the full service and low cost ends of the market – as well as the possibility of introducing smaller aircraft. Cathay is considering taking advantage of the third runway to expand its fleet by approximately 50% – or 100 aircraft excluding HK Express – and could place a new batch of aircraft orders as early as this year." That last sentence is a rather large claim. Does anyone know the source for this? I haven't heard any news of CX considering a new a/c order. If true, any ideas what a/c they'd consider buying? There is also the question as to which type is going to make up the backbone of the regional fleet going forward given many of the 330s will be due for retirement soon. Although a very capable and flexible bird, the 350 is a lot of aeroplane for some of these routes and may be more capability than is required (unless CX's freight requirements + fleet commonality advantages help tip the balance). |
