Cyclone NIDA

Cyclone NIDA is forecast pass close to HKG tomorrow night.

I have no experience of how much a tropical cyclone would affect HKG operations. including ferry transfers.

I am due to arrive HKG at 0700 on 2 August. Does anyone have any experience that would help me to decide whether to change my plans?

Thanks

G50

Your flight might be affected as Nida is a strong typhoon.

IRROPS

I am scheduled to fly EWR to HKG to MNL early AM on Aug 3rd. If my flight does not make it to EWR does CX ever book you on another airline. For example, could they rebook me on BR from JFK to MNL leaving around the same time or am I stuck getting on the next CX flight that has availability?

Depends on what kind of ticket you have

There is a very good chance this won't be happening. Might be a bit late now but if you can fly earlier, it would be better (although you'll be stuck in a typhoon with nothing to do for most of that day).

The impact of the typhoon is likely to start at around Monday evening (local time). The current aerodrome forecast has gale force winds hitting HKG from the north or northwest (which translates to cross wind at HKG) from around 6pm.

Also, given current forecasts, it's difficult to predict where the typhoon will land exactly, a bit of a 50-50 guess whether it will land to the east or to the west of HKG.

A direct hit or west landing will have a much greater impact on Hong Kong overall. Plus, the airport is located in the west. Expect force 12 winds in this case. A typhoon that lands in the east does not have as much of an impact as the terrain partially protects the city from the wind. Probably not much more than force 8 winds if this is the case. A few years back, a super typhoon landed nearby in the east of HKG, and some flights could still operate.

Thank you for that.

I just received a message from Cathay - flight cancelled - contact your travel agent.

It doesn't matter (within reason) what speed the winds are if they're in the 'right' direction, although NIDA looks to be both powerful and a direct hit on HK.

What usually happens is flights continue but on a heavily reduced schedule. Long hauls are the last to get cut, especially arrivals, but ferries will likely be stopped if it reaches T8 - which I would say this one probably will.

Flight cancelled - what are my options?

I am up a creek without a paddle! Cathay just cancelled my flight and there are no Cathay offices open in UK now.

I need to get to HK and understand the difficulties caused by NIDA. But will Cathay be helpful in getting me a new booking or will I have to stump up full fare to get on the first available flight?

This is showing on the site right now. Seems not to have been updated based on the time stamp.

If you have started your journey, just call CX HK Hotline, long wait guarantee but they will sort it out for you.

If you not started your journey, call your travel agent

Cathay will get you to the end of your ticket with them on the first available flight, just call them in HK or when the UK office opens. They are well rehearsed in handling typhoons.

If you have non-flexible bookings beyond that for other airlines, hotels etc. you will need to get your travel insurance involved. Unfortunately these things are common in this part of the world at this time of year.

I had not started my journey and it was an on-line booking. I called the HK number - 15 minute wait and a very helpful agent re-routed me onto CX250 from LHR tonight. Looking at the forecast even that flight looks likely to get disrupted.

My cancelled flight was CX358 from MAN. No extra charges were made and a new travel document has arrived in my email. But I can't check in online for the new flight because there is a message that says

We apologise that Online Check-In is not available as we cannot locate your e-Ticket in your booking.
.
Do I need to worry about this?

Thanks

CX379 HKG-DUS cancelled tonight.

I'm on a F redemption booking via QFF. Will CX rebook me or will they palm me off to QF, in which case the obvious problem is finding award bucket availability at the last minute - but surely CX have a responsibility to honour the ticket?

2747-3333 is engaged when I try to call. What should I do?

Also, I already checked-in my luggage via HK Station Airport Express. What should I do about my luggage?
