HK Observatory saying it will lower T8 to T3, at 1pm or earlier. So ops should start recovering in the afternoon. From flightradar you can see flights inbound flights starting to return en masse. Good luck to those of you flying today....have a beer.

Another 15 minutes or so, but look at their detour over Russia on FlightAware - assuming it's accurate

Reason why CX canceled everything - no need to pay overtime for all the crew!

update as of 12:40pm local: T8 signal lowered, T3 raised.
For non-HK people, that means the typhoon warning has been lowered and a less severe warning raised in its place. Liability wise, it means the insurance of transport operators in HK is active again, which means CX and KA crews can now be reasonably expected to report to the airport for duty. (insurance coverage is limited for many local transport operators during T8 or higher). Practically, flights are landing again. And a deluge of flights are now on their way to HKG, including regional flights. I think safe to assume CX and KA operations should start limited departure operations again within the next hour and ramp up through the afternoon and evening. Now is when they'll shine given how many birds they have sitting on the ground at HKG...and the non-HKG carriers are going to pay a price, due to the lack of arrival aircraft. Sigh of relief I'm not flying today or yesterday. These typhoons are always luck-of-the-draw bullets you either avoid or don't. |

SQ1 tried to land about an hour ago at HKG. Had to go around and diverting to TPE. Will be interesting to see how things play out over the next few hours.

I've heard that crew for CX flights scheduled from 2pm onwards are expected to report for duty. Of course, so much equipment is out of sorts that you can't guarantee anything...but it seems like your chances post 2pm should improve markedly.
I notice on FlightRadar that CX884 (1:55pm) *appears* to be showing up, and if so would likely be the first CX departure of the day. Anyway, good luck to all you folks flying today. |
Rather annoyingly, my flight CX549 (HND to HKG) today was cancelled yesterday evening. Not sure why an 8pm arrival was cancelled. Presumably the plane was going to be stuck elsewhere.

Other than in the very peak of the storms the aircraft can still fly - its the crew and passengers that cant. Foreign carriers can takeoff because the crew are all together. If one of them makes it to the airport, all of them do. When weather hits an airport its always the home carriers that are most affected. |
