Checked baggage question

first time CX flyer.

traveling ORD-HKG-DPS on CX 807/785. Flight into HKG arrives at 8:00 pm, we will overnight in Hong Kong, then flight to DPS departs the next morning (10:20 am).

I would prefer not to drag my large checked bags around Hong Kong for the night.

Upon arrival in HKG, will I need to claim/transfer/re-check my bags, or can I check my bags all the way through to DPS while at ORD? In other words, upon arrival in HKG, can I simply arrive and pass through immigration and leave the airport without dealing with my checked luggage? thanks!

That layover is short enough that you should have no trouble leaving your bags at the airport. The trick is that when you check in at ORD, make sure the agent checks your bag all the way to DPS. If it is checked only to HKG you will have to collect it. If it is checked to DPS then it won't even come up on the conveyor in HKG.

If your check in agent refuses for some reason you should ask for a supervisor (but I can't imagine they will refuse). Either way, if they won't check it all the way to DPS at least you'll know before you leave ORD whether you have to pick up the bags or not.

Usually the agent will check though automatically. If they ask if you're getting off in HK, just say no. That you're styling in a hotel inside the Terminl and not going thru immigration - even if you are.

If they won't check your luggage all the way through, then there is a place in HKG where you can store your luggage so you store it there overnight.

Guy is right on this one, although its technically two days simply ask the agent at ORD to check all the way through, and if they asked just tell them you are going to wait it out at the airport. The difference is less than 24 hours, this is no different than you arriving at 8 a.m. and your connection is at 8 p.m., the luggage will be checked all the way through, so for your case it's definitely possible.

Now, if somehow you got a dragon lady that insists that she can only checked to Hong Kong. No worries. You can do two things:

1) Go to transfer desk during arrival (right before customers), and give them your luggage tags, tell them you want it transferred for tomorrow morning's flight, they will take care of it for you. (And yes I've done this). The only drawback is those lines can be long, or you get people simply running up to the desk cutting (happens too often, that's why I don't use the transfer desk anymore)

2) Grab your luggage in Hong Kong as you exit customs, go upstairs to departure, and check-them in again. CX will take any bags that's within 24 hours of flight time.

So yes, you can have plenty of options for CX to keep your bags without dragging around.

At HKG, the Left Luggage operation is on the Arrivals level at the far left as you enter the airport from the Express Train or street facing "in" towards the gates. It is a paid storage area, not an unattended locker. I have found them very helpful and honest. I once left my Nikon on the counter and walked away with my luggage. When I realized it and returned about 30 minutes later, not only were they holding my camera at their desk, but they had noted my name (from the info on the records of the luggage I had just retrieved) after I walked away; and they requested photo identification before releasing the camera to me. I was pleased and impressed with the service.
