I would prefer not to drag my large checked bags around Hong Kong for the night.

Upon arrival in HKG, will I need to claim/transfer/re-check my bags, or can I check my bags all the way through to DPS while at ORD? In other words, upon arrival in HKG, can I simply arrive and pass through immigration and leave the airport without dealing with my checked luggage? thanks!
Guy is right on this one, although its technically two days simply ask the agent at ORD to check all the way through, and if they asked just tell them you are going to wait it out at the airport. The difference is less than 24 hours, this is no different than you arriving at 8 a.m. and your connection is at 8 p.m., the luggage will be checked all the way through, so for your case it's definitely possible.

Now, if somehow you got a dragon lady that insists that she can only checked to Hong Kong. No worries. You can do two things:

1) Go to transfer desk during arrival (right before customers), and give them your luggage tags, tell them you want it transferred for tomorrow morning's flight, they will take care of it for you. (And yes I've done this). The only drawback is those lines can be long, or you get people simply running up to the desk cutting (happens too often, that's why I don't use the transfer desk anymore)

2) Grab your luggage in Hong Kong as you exit customs, go upstairs to departure, and check-them in again. CX will take any bags that's within 24 hours of flight time.

So yes, you can have plenty of options for CX to keep your bags without dragging around.
