CX regional J: good service but a threadbare 773

Flew TPE-HKG on a 773 yesterday in regional J. The service was good and the food and cocktails were very nice...but the 773 was rather threadbare. I can understand 772s looking like this but the 300s are more recent and it needs an update.

If I compare SQ regional J with CX regional J, with SQs blue-config older 772, SQ is still a better experience.

Unless you're into the nitty gritty of airplanes, from a comfort perspective there isn't really any difference between CX's 777 regional configurations (200 or 300s). Both configs suck in J as well as in Y. Worst of the lot are the regional configs with the "new" regional business class, which is anything but new and just has a less-comfortable seat material and design versus the older, and squishier/wider "old" version.

The difference is not between the 200/300 regional configs but between the regional configs and the 300ERs. The ERs are all long-haul configs and are lightyears ahead of the regional versions.

the 700-300s (non ERs) have always sucked, in my opinion.

i'm actually not so sour about old 777-300 J. Yes they are 3rd generation older "sofa" type of seat. However I did find them rather comfortable to sit on for short (say 3 hours flight). You kind of "sink in" to the seat which doesn't happen in the new cirrus nor older olympus long-J seats. I guess perfect bed can't be perfect sofa and vice versa.

only problem I have with older 777 regionla J is the lack of AVOD and crappy PTV which I wouldn't even gift to my worst enemy.

+1. I loved the old recliners for a short 3-5 hour regional daytime flight. We'll see how the brand new regional J seats compare.

The new seats are much worse although entertainment options are better.

When I am flying back in evening and very tired from a couple of days work, business dinner and poor sleep in hotel, all I want is to take a nap (seems like half the business pax are napping). There is no way I can do it on the current J seats with (hardly) no recline. The second best is to watch a movie. Again a no-no in the current seats. Very poor.

Actually the old recliners r not bad for napping just the leg rest is not good support. The eletronic version is a disaster and now the latest type - dont know?
But sure it beats European business class

You are quit right. It also beats coach.
Just that competition in Asia is good. And also we get used to the occasional longhaul plane that is SO much better. So, I am getting plane picky and do not hesitate to book on other airlines when seats are better.

My view is that CX needs to position itself at the top for premium regional pax if it wants to stay competitive. And its old (have not tried new) J seat is poor.

I think compare regionally speaking they r not bad, at least the same if not better than JL which is still using 767 on flights over 10 hours+

And most North American domestic F.... which has a seat that is only marginally better than CX's PEY (same pitch but 1-2" more width).

love the old j recliners - if leg support is an issue i've been on a number of flights where people have taken off their shoes and put their feet up on the armrest of the seat in front!
