Will this work (will CX cancel me?)

I already have a ticket JFK-NGB-WNZ-HKG-JFK

Now, something came up so I'm going to skip the WNZ-HKG part, but instead will, on a separate ticket purchase, go PVG-TPE-HKG. The PVG-TPE I'm already taken care of.

I am asked to buy my own TPE-HKG part (so I can return home HKG-JFK.) The one-way ticket is $12,000 TWD. Ironically, when I made a dummy round-trip ticket the cost is only $6,000 TWD (half-price for roundtrip!!!)

If, on a separate CX booking, I made a purchase of TPE-HKG-TPE, with no intention of flying back to TPE, but instead will just take the connecting flight to JFK, will that work? Will CX know ahead of time that I have conflicting itinerary and cancel me or give me trouble on my HKG-JFK?

Thanks for answers.

Is it all one ticket? If so, you may very well have the rest cancelled, i.e. the HKG-JFK leg.

No problem here.

Your bigger issue is the first point above.

Thanks Jane. The last time I had a similar situation, I tried to go to HKG early, called CX Reservations, there are no more seats for me days ahead, so I asked the agent can I just arrange for my own travels back to HKG and bypass this WNZ-HKG leg? (Eventually bought myself a ticket to Shenzhen) The agent's response was "No problem, I will just make a note in your record."

I suspect I can do the same thing again? Call up CX Reservations and tell them I had an emergency so I can't do the WNZ-HKG leg, even if it is one ticket, but preserve the HKG-JFK leg? Do you foresee a big issue based on your experience? Was I super lucky last time?

Each situation is different. Maybe its because you're DM that CX offered to do what is basically not possible... ie skip a sector of the ticket without having the ticket changed / repriced.

So you may do what you think is best.. but be prepared if it can't be done cos it isn't official.

That's what it sounds like based on your and Jane's answer. So I did the more sensible thing: called my TA, asked him to cancelled my previous booking and made a new booking, the net difference is only $77 USD so no big deal.

Better than buying one-way TPE-HKG they make you buy Y-fare (website) but round-trip you can buy them at V-fare (total half the price.)
