I also got this and noticed below.....:
And as we continually strive to provide the finest service and space for our members, we’ll be starting renovations of The Wing at Hong Kong International Airport in the fourth quarter of 2010. The opening and closure of the lower level Business Class lounge and the balcony level will alternate by phase, with First Class following once Business Class has fully re-opened. |
Why they had to pick Monday anyway - too bad my next CX flight is on Oct 10... which seems to be a better date to start/open something: 10-10-10

I have heard about a new CX / KA lounge called The Cabin opening in September at HKIA.
I hear it will be located at gate 23 and will service both Business & First Class passengers. Room for approx 200 passengers. Interesting development? |
Cabin is open now. I'm sitting in it waiting for 715 (delayed). I guess it soft opened, and letting in DMs, at least according to them at check in. Sadly I don't see any iPads to play with... :(
Food in the Deli looks like a much better offering than J lounge, in terms of quality and choice. Definitely less than in the F buffet, but has some new additions, which is nice for those of us in the F lounge at least weekly.. Decor is slightly space age. Not sure if I like it or not. Has strange circular cubicles. More comfy than they look, but not great for working. Lots of windows, for those that like that. Lighting in the non eating part of the lounge is way down low. I like that, as I find it encourages people to talk at low volumes, and I generally don't like too bright lights. All in all, I can see myself coming here at expense of F lounge on occasion. |
We have some photos of the lounge (admittedly, not professionally taken) from the tour today by Cathay's Head of Product Alex McGowan
http://asia.businesstraveller.com/as...hkia-the-cabin It's interesting that they have soft-opened the lounge in this way - I half suspect it is because they did the media tour and then will close it until the official opening, but perhaps not. I am flying out tomorrow night and will be sure to have a look to see if it is still open. |
No noodles!
Nice bar, with special juices, smoothies, Chinese teas, cocktails. No showers (that I could find). |

I am flying out of HKIA this afternoon, but am just a SL, so will probably miss out then. No problem though, since it is highly unlikely my plane will leave from near Gate 23.
I'm flying SA a few days after the official opening of the lounge, so I might ask about it at check-in. |
Was at around 16:30 there with maybe just 8 guests in total. But filled up later considerably. Check-In just told me on whether it was opened already, that "Marco Polo" members have access - she wasn't referring to any tier. My wife and I are both only GO, so confirmation that it's not only DM. Entry via stairs (unlikely with trolley) or elevator - no escalator. Soft-opening guests get the normal lounge vouchers mentioning only Pier and Wing, but in addition to that a leaflet/voucher not on boarding pass paper describing The Cabin.
Food selection was quite OK - agree that it's definitely better than J section of Wing and Pier, but as noted already: no noodles. However, they had small grilled sandwiches, grilled vegetables antipasti, smoked salmon, two kinds of cheese (swiss/camembert), parma ham, etc. - but best were the huge fresh shrimps. The buffet had BBQ pork buns, pumpkin ravioli in mushroom cream sauce, fried rice, etc. So was ideal to fill up, as HKG-TPE doesn't serve full dinner. Space age really fits the description quite well. The workstations are indeed a bit small to comfortably work in those with laptops and look like cocoons / eggs. In terms of design I would compare it as a mix between the W hotel or the Mira hotel in HKG. Lots of white, grey, browns in wood and all that contrasted with red carpet and leather. Nice window seating areas for the plane spotters among us. Although no showers, I liked the touch-less opening of washroom doors with proximity sensors. It's still an airport facility with lots of throughput after all. Very attentive and friendly service, but maybe as well because there were not many guests in there yet. Couple of CX staff in suits walking up and down, probably monitoring. Overall, very happy about the addition. Went previously to Premium Plaza lounge for more 'substantial' food if noodles were not enough, but now definitely going to The Cabin. |

Are they going to start shutting down The Wing in October and send the pax to the other lounges? I am schedule for transit in January. I hope they finish by then.
sounds like they will do lower level J wing, then upper level J wing, then F wing, so i imagine they will keep the wing open throughout and only shut parts at a time. |
