Faster Flight

My flight (CX879) For Dec 30th is listed at a duration of 15h 00min. But CX873 for the same date is listed at 14h 45min. Both flights use same equipment - 74A. The equipment and duration for each of those flights is the same this month and next month. So with same aircraft on same route and same O/D, why is one flight scheduled to fly faster than the other?

probably to take into account weather patterns and traffic for different times of day. it's only 15 minutes difference

Since dep/arr times are based on leaving the gate until arriving at the gate, sometimes airlines will make allowances for traffic at the airport. Since 879 leaves middle of the day when more flights arrive/depart there could be a longer taxi/hold for take-off. 873 leaves at midnight when only a few flights leave so usually gets out without any delays. (not speaking of leaving gate but actually taking off)

Exactly...I'm pretty sure it has to do with ground traffic at the airport

From my many experiences taking CX879, it is always a long taxi way from the gate to liftoff from the runway. Quite often while at the holding point prior to entering the runway for takeoff, I can see 3-4 planes one by one landing. So during that early afternoon hour, not only is it a heavy amount of flights taking off, but quite a busy period for arrivals into SFO as well.

According to this, at one point CX879 was listed as departing at 12:05PM and arriving at 6:45PM (14h 40m) when it used the 74A.
