different fare codes on outbound and return
i am planning a trip to tokyo, and would like to upgrade the outbound flight only.
is it possible for agents / CX ticketing to issue a ticket that's K-class on the outbound, and whatever lowest mileage-accuring class on the return ?
i asked my company's TA this but she had no idea what i was talking about.

hmm, i m not too sure if it is always possible. I just called up CX reservation in Sydney to look for a SYD-HKG return ticket, when I asked for L + V ticket or L + K ticket, she said I cannot combine fare class like this. The ticket class must be consistent the whole way.

I think I have seen this possible for quite a few Asian destinations...and in particular back to the OP's question, I think for Tokyo often the L/M/K/H fares are combinable...

As others wrote, mostly you can.
If fare rules include following line, you can.
PERMITTED COMBINATIONS:
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
If fare rules prohibit such a combination, you can not.
