different fare codes on outbound and return

i am planning a trip to tokyo, and would like to upgrade the outbound flight only.

is it possible for agents / CX ticketing to issue a ticket that's K-class on the outbound, and whatever lowest mileage-accuring class on the return ?

i asked my company's TA this but she had no idea what i was talking about.

Yes, absolutely. They will price up the ticket by adding up the roundtrip fares of K and (insert class here) and divide the amount by 2.

hmm, i m not too sure if it is always possible. I just called up CX reservation in Sydney to look for a SYD-HKG return ticket, when I asked for L + V ticket or L + K ticket, she said I cannot combine fare class like this. The ticket class must be consistent the whole way. :(

It is possible, but not always. My US TA cannot do that for certain booking classes, but my HK TA can.

I think I only saw it with US bounded travel for different fare codes on o/b vs i/b, for intra asia I never saw one

I think I have seen this possible for quite a few Asian destinations...and in particular back to the OP's question, I think for Tokyo often the L/M/K/H fares are combinable...

thank you all. yes, CX ticketing just took the average of the K and L fares. not sure if it's because its NRT, or if they can do this for every destination.

Done all the time. My last trip my outbound trip to HKG from JFK was H class because I bought it in last minute, but my return trip was M class.

As others wrote, mostly you can.

If fare rules include following line, you can.

PERMITTED COMBINATIONS:
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS

If fare rules prohibit such a combination, you can not.
