What to do in Vancouver, BC Canada?

Last week I won my 2nd trip for the year. The first one was to LAX in april and this time I won airline tickets for two to YVR and hotell accomendations and hockey tickets. I will be in Vancouver from the 16/11-19/11 Is there something special going on during that period? Is there something I shouldnt miss?

How did you win the tickets? Was that an airline employee competition?

Aren't you in the USA now, by the way, kempis?

Vancouver is a great city. And not far from Whistler if you are interested in skiing.

My favorites: 1) Day trip to Whistler ski resort, 2) day trip on Grey Line via bus and scenic ferry to Victoria, 3) stroll through Stanley Park.

Vancouver is one of my all-time favorite destinations. I love strolling through the West End with its shops and cafs along Denman Street (don't miss eating at the Rain City Grill - excellent food and service with a great wine list) and walking along English Bay as well as through Stanley Park.

If you don't have time to go to Whistler, you can have a lovely time atop Grouse Mountain, which is very close to the city (about 25 minutes' drive as I recall). You take a cable car up the mountain where you will find skiing (conditions permitting), decent food and drink and a spectacular view of the area.

On the way to/from Grouse Mountain, you can stop at the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which you can cross (it's a little scary!).

"Gastown" is also interesting as is Granville Island, the waterfront and Canada Place...I could go on and on!

The ferry to/from Victoria is a fine trip and, for a more local (and brief) excursion on water, take the SeaBus across Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver for a beautiful view of the Vancouver skyline.

On one visit, I took a floatplane (DeHaviland Beaver) over to the Gulf Islands on the "mail run"...a thrilling experience with gorgeous scenery.

No matter which option(s) you choose, you are certain to have a wonderful time in Vancouver...will you please share your experiences in a trip report?

Meanwhile, you might want to have a look at these web sites:

I lived in Van for a few years. The favourite stuff for my visitors was:

1. Victoria by ferry
2. Victoria by floatplane from downtown
3. Drive up to Whistler for lunch
4. View from top of Grouse
5. Gastown
6. Shopping downtown for CD's and DVD's (great prices)
7. Wreck beach (be prepared)
8. Renting a boat out at Horseshoe Bay
9. Granville Island (market, bars, food)
10. Restaurants...(Van. has been best restaurant city in the world for several years running)
11. Not the nightlife.

If you're a big hockey fan (and being from Sweden, I would assume so!), then I think you'll enjoy the Canucks game at GM Place! It was the highlight of a quick roadtrip up there from Portland. Vancouver is beautiful!

Yes I am a big hockey fan. Like I wrote one of the prize was two tickets for the Vancouver vs NY Rangers game on the 17/11. That would be Mark Messiers first game back in town since he left.

Whistler was really nice. It feels like a little European ski village, with music in the streets, lots of restaurants, lots of timeshare presentations!

Go to Whistler. It is a great place to visit. If you are up for anice plane ride, you can take a small plane ride through the glaciers in the area. The view is spectacular and worth every cent. Granville Island is a great place to visit. Have lunch there and then drive around Stanley Park.

Hi, Kempis - Congratulations! Vancouver is one of my favorite cities, too. If the weather is nice (or if you're a runner ), the seawall walk (run) around Stanley Park is wonderful - nearly 10K in length, with gorgeous views.

Vancouver also has one of the largest Chinatowns in North America; if you like Chinese food, it's probably better than you'll find in Sweden.

The Museum of Anthropology is a long bus ride from downtown (on the UBC campus; catch the bus along Granville St.). Their exhibits relating to Pacific Northwest Indians is terrific.

Unusual dining experience: a place on upper Robson St. that specializes in Northwest Indian cuisine. Interesting AND tasty! I forget the name of the place, but could dig it out if you're interested (or I posted it on a prior Vancouver thread).

Enjoy your trip - when will you get to San Francisco?

What interests you? Whistler is a nice day trip. The views on the drive are awesome. It is about 1 hr from Vanc. Stanley Park is always a fav with visitors. A guided tour can take up the better part of a day and will highlight areas of the city that interest you.

Salmon House on the Hill, West Vancouver, for alder smoked salmon. The BC Indian place downtown used to be called Mukamuk (find an old timer to get the new name - same location and food).
