And a longer version. Sorry.. No. Visas/permits etc are the responsibility of the traveller. AFAIK ALL airlines refuse (rightly IMO) to be responsible for refunding money etc when passengers fail to get all required travel documentation.

You don't mention any Travel Insurance held...although I suspect it would be an unusual policy that covered such things....

What they said.

Did you look at the viability of travelling to the US and crossing at a land border?

To be honest I find Ops post extremely hard to follow. What exactly was the delay in getting the eTA? Most are approved quickly, the only ones I know that took more than a few minutes were for people with permission to study/work and therefore a more complex situation. I even met people who applied on phone at the airport and had no issues.

What airline? Most airlines that fly in (certainly AC and LH) have very signs about the eTA.

Unfortunately it's always worth checking entry requirements. Mongolia for example last year for the first time in many many years required a $$$ visa for many countries due to some EU thing going on. Half the places I went to didn't believe me but it was definitely required on entry.

Your governments website should be able to provide up to date details.

Not just visa but other things too, did you know you can't enter NZ (or a plane there) without a return ticket?

we were surprised this morning, flying from EU-CAN-USA.

we checked in at airport and my companion (schengen citizen w/ USA visa) was told that she needed ETA for the transit in toronto. even though she had done that route the year before.

the airline agent checked with a neighboring colleague, and then even phoned a supervisor, who confirmed that this new rule came into effect back in May or June.

we applied for her ETA on the spot, using our phone, and it was approved in literally minutes. .....

except when we landed in toronto we were shuffled through to USA connection (gate F) , and only went through USA immigration, and the Canadian ETA that we fretted about at the airport never was checked for.

whats the deal? does she need to apply for another ETA for the travel back USA-CAN-EU?

The agents were correct that she needed an ETA. The ETA is valid for 5 years or until she gets a new passport, whichever comes first.

eTA is check only at enter as US and Canada does not have exit immigration. So there would not be a check at YYZ for exiting Canada and eTA. The Immigration check that you encountered in YYZ is the US entry immigration, called pre-clearance.

The normal process for a normal applicant from most countries is instantaneous. Delays are caused when the travel record, country of passport, nationality and Interpol record raises a red flag.

As to who the OP should look to compensate him for his expenses and pain/suffering? I suggest a mirror.
