And why should they?

BA management should be flooding T5 with trained, paid (perhaps with combat pay?) staff.

Of course, BA management should be the first to lead by example and volunteer if that's what they're asking non management staff to do.

Indeed. The costs have spiralled so much, BA should just pay their staff to be there.

Now I don't get it, are they asking the staff to work without pay, or to simply postpone their vacations/days off?

Are they paying the staff during the regular workhours?

If they need volunteers to show people around in T5, maybe they should offer the gold status in exchange. I am sure some FlyerTalkers would happily volunteer

BBC banned from T5

Watching BBC News 24 just now and there's not much in the way of on-the-spot reporting. The two main stories are the elections in Zimbabwe and the chaos in T5 but BBC reporters have been banned from filming / reporting not only in Zimbabwe but also in Terminal 5

Reports from Heathrow now consist of a reporter standing on the airport perimeter saying that he has no idea when BA are going to release a statement about what is going on.

The reporter has been in T5 himself but only without a camera crew.

Look what you've done Special Correspondant Caroline Hawley! You've made that poor guy have to stand in the wind and cold now!

Dow Jones Newswires:

" Virgin Atlantic has already seen 200 passengers switch from BA to fly on long-haul flights," said Virgin Atlantic spokesman Paul Charles. "Our daily Dubai and Hong Kong services have seen the largest switch, with many more BA passengers expected to move across in the next few days," he said.

Guardian - Andy Horrowitz:

"Why can't you give out some proper information?" I asked a BA manager. "We can't," he wailed. "We don't have any - and anyway, they haven't given us a Tannoy."

----------

Daily Telegraph - David Millward

"BA made the mistake of over-hyping expectations,'' said Paul Charles, Virgin Atlantic's head of communications. "They were handed a gift and failed to unwrap it properly. It really was a sad day for Great Britain plc.''

Sarah Keyes, the airline's Executive Club manager, told them: "You'll find that one of the terminal's major attributes, and one that sets it apart from all other airports, is its total air of calm.''

--------

Daily Telegraph - Gordon Rayner

"We knew it wasn't going to work,'' the worker said. "It shouldn't have opened. The computers are too quick for the people - you have to have a human at the other end unloading bags.''

Willie Walsh, said: "I am accepting responsibility for the mistakes we made. If people want someone to point the finger at then they can point it at me. Our performance was not good enough.''

----------

Daily Telegraph - Alistair Osbourne

Take staff screening. "One of the problems is that more BA people than there should have been were trying to get airside for a look at the new terminal,'' says a BAA source. "That upset our resourcing plans. Are we supposed to over-resource on the basis that people who shouldn't be there might turn up?''

Asked if BA chairman Martin Broughton could dismiss Walsh, a BA spokesman says irritably: "Any suggestion that Willie Walsh would be sacked is absolutely ludicrous as you well know.''

Analysts stress that, so far, BA has escaped any major financial hit. Tim Marshall at UBS says: "Financially, this is not a disaster for BA.''

Rita Clifton, chairman of brand consultancy Interbrand, says: "I think BA will ride it out. If you have a strong brand you can normally overcome a cock-up. Service recovery can be a way of winning loyalty. If you treat the people affected in the right way, they can come to feel better about you than they did originally.'' Walsh would settle for that.

-----------

Disclaimer, although I have quoted from the Daily Telegraph UK, I totally do not condone their overall political views nor agree with them whatsoever.

Aligning yourself with Mugabe and the Chinese Government. Another PR coup from BA(A) . Did they really think that would stem the flow of bad news?

Cue reporters going undercover and smuggling themselves into T5 with a cameraphone.

Cue also the press getting even sharper knives out - "Well if they're not even going to have the decency to let us in, we'll screw the b*stards".

well they would say that, wouldn't they. DXB does not even fly from T5.

This sort of thing from VS is not really very helpful. The majority of PAX have no chance of switching carriers, as even with a refund from BA, the cost of a new ticket with VS at the last minute will prevent all but corporates doing it.

Being a sad git...

I did a quick analysis of the departures and cancellations from T5 and the other terminals from the start of service up to 1500 today. (I wonder what else I can find to stop me doing the work I have to do today.) It does assume that the "actual" departure times on ba.com are accurate.

From terminal 5

Total flights 106
Cancelled: 27
Cancelled %: 25%
Ave delay: 00:44:26
Greatest delay 03:35:00 (LCA)
Least delay: 00:00:00 (GLA - only ontime so far)

From the other terminals

Total flights 49
Cancelled: 3
Cancelled %: 6%
Ave delay: 00:09:43
Greatest delay 00:40:00 (ORD and PHX)
Least delay: -00:06:00 (TLV)

Here is the raw data in case other sad people want to play (I also have it in Excel):

From a PR perspective, I would have had WW touring the depths of T5 in overalls. The slick suit and tie made him look far removed from the problems. There could have been one or two pool reporters with cameras to feed the footage back as not to interfere with operations. I would have put as many managers from Waterside in customer areas to answer questions and make sure "live" information was getting back to ops.

I would have had the press in there recording it all to see how in a crisis BA is all hands on deck, starting with the generals. I would have set up a Press tent with plenty of food and beverages to keep the media as comfortable as possible. It might not help in the coverage, but definitely wouldn't hurt.

I would have had WW or another senior official (not PR, but Ops) giving briefings at scheduled times at least two to three times a day, even if there were no real updates. Let the reporters ask the same questions over and over; the public begins to get bored and starts to tune out.

Just my opinion

Can't easily - It will display negatives as #######

However, if you copy the times in hour format by changing the type to hh in Format Cells -> custom setting you will be able to select only the hours and minutes as seperate columns.... Then if you copy these columns again, you can change these to number type, you can get the time as form of a decimal, where 00 hrs is 0 and 24 hrs is 1, and you can apply negative arithmetic to this and by multiplying by 24, you can get negative time. Slightly long winded and there is possibly an easier way....

There is. See here.

But thanks for the workaround.

Anyway I won't be needing it for the T5 stats for quite some time
