Lots of flight delays at LHR this afternoon [17 Mar]
We are in T5C waiting on more information on our delayed flight to SFO. It is not that the incoming flight was late, as the plane has been here since arriving from South Africa this morning.
Over the past hour have been many announcements regarding delayed flights, not just to the US, but Athens, Mumbai, and other places. Any idea what might be the cause? It should not be weather-related in so many diverse places. Maybe crew shortages?

May be a 380 specific issue related to maintenance. Possibly related to a shortage of ground staff making turnaround times impossible.
Interestingly, I was in the GF lounge last week and there was an announcement "BA flight to wherever is now boarding from gate x" for every long haul and some short haul flights. This was a human announcement rather than the automated ones you hear in the main terminal. These flights were not delayed. A host confirmed this is a new policy. Sat on the terrace, I heard each announcement twice - including the one from GC upstairs. Was not conducive to making the lounge a haven of tranquillity. Nor was it reliable as it was not every flight.
Is this now a thing or a short term experiment gone wrong?

Your aircraft G-XLEC is having a fuel pump replaced and it also has a passenger oxygen issue. If the flight hasn’t left by 1925 there will be a flight time limitations issue too.
There are several resourcing issues (staffing) on the ramp affecting services and a fair few technical issues this afternoon.

I wonder if this was the aircraft that was supposed to be on BA287 on Tuesday 14th March. When boarding the return BA286 that was much delayed the captain mentioned that there was a plane substitution due to an engine starter problem as the cause of the lengthy, almost 4 hour delay (we got XLEA, iirc).
