The way it should be handled is they are sent back and then on landing escorted off by the police and given the choice either to get arrested or to pay for a full fare ticket.

They've brought in 100 fine for fare evasion on the train, this should be no different.

I must confess that I would be apoplectic and would not be happy if this individual was then allowed to continue to travel anywhere within my vicinity.
Yes - Ive had it happen twice on BA in the last few months when Ive boarded near the end. One girl successfully guilt tripped me and the other man was so abusive I just walked away from it knowing Id be upset that I let the incident ruin my day.

Thankfully I have never had an issue with being relegated to a lower class on BA because of these shenanigans. I did have someone try to steal my QSuite once but obviously I wasnt going to let that one fly.

He read 3D instead of 30 and put his bag above 3AC, noticing that all seats in row 3 are occupied and the closest seat available was in Row 1. Just did not wanted to bother other passengers. Polite person.

Please, please, please NEVER let these whateveryouwantocalltheshi get away with it. It is theft and perhaps intimidation. BA must know this is happening and by not clamping down on it they are allowing some of their customers to be manipulated. Its disgusting.

As a fellow glaswegian, they would be getting told to golf, tango foxtrot if they were to try that in my seat...

It's theft pure and simple.

All right, I admit it...I tried it once about 25 years ago. EWR to AMS (go big or go home! lol). Needless to say, you know the result.

I've accidentally sat in the wrong seat myself and started to argue the point with a couple that came on after me. In my defence on that one though, I'd just got off a 14 hour Trans-Pacific with a 7 hour regional flight before that and I was not really thinking very clearly and had indeed sat in the wrong seat. That said, that was the only time I've ever done it in the last 15 years because I've made damn sure since....

I have some sympathy with the sentiment but please, please dont let it happen again- you absolutely do not need to get into an argument, you just have a quiet word with the CC and they will sort it out for you.

IIRC CIHY has rather a good way of dealing with this situation involving the chip and pin machine!

There is an article currently doing the rounds about a parent and child who had booked a middle/window on FR but someone else had also been allocated the window seat and refused to swap. No criticism of FR for putting 2 people in the same seat but a pile-on of the passenger at the window for refusing to swap.

This always gives me a smile- when someone comes on about last onto an A319, the whole of CE is full, and the first thing they do is stop beside row 1, have a close look at their BP and then a close look at the number above row 1! I guess some people just dont have that much experience with counting

I see it has been corrected now but I learnt something quite interesting recently- apparently it is a well-known technique to deliberately make grammatical errors or misspell words in the titles of social media posts as it will increase engagement by 200-300%!

I think I saw this tactic in action on my recent flights. My wife and I were on a weekend trip and booked into the emergency row in Economy with EF showing a blocked seat next to me. The last passenger to board says that they are sitting in that seat. I say that I am surprised but there must have been a late change (I know that this can happen to blocked seats), The fellow passenger then remembers that they are actually in the exit row seat on the other side of the cabin, which EF also had blocked. They manage to do this without any reference to a boarding pass.

All that might have been a reasonable confusion on their behalf but the same passenger was on the return flight two days later. Same tactic. He boarded last and said he was sitting in the exit row seat next to me which again was blocked in EF. This time I again said I was surprised and asked if he was sure based on his boarding pass. Unfortunately this was on his phone (fair enough) and he had already turned it off. But it was okay - he could see that there was a spare seat a couple of rows back so he would sit there to make it easier for both of us…

To be fair, on most long-haul aircraft its not usual to board next to row 1, so the occasional traveller who doesnt know the difference between an A319 and an A350 could be forgiven for wanting to check.

Given the police in the UK doesnt even show up if you have your car stolen, I somehow doubt theyd trouble themselves with arresting a self-upgrader.

That's the easiest way
Someone found in the wrong cabin are then automatically charged a 50 fine (everyone carries a credit or debit card)
Then escorted back to their seat

It's because these clowns know that the worst that can happen is they'll have to return to the seat they have paid for, there is no risk to them.
They'll just try again on their next flight.

Autopiloting to the wrong side of the aisle I can just about understand - I've done it once or twice myself on connections after a longhaul. But anything more than that is clearly a chancer and something that shoudl be strongly discouraged - e.g. via the chip and pin machine.

I'd suggest anyone who tries to argue when pulled on this should be booted off the flight TBH; if they're happy to try to steal on the ground and argue with CC and fellow passengers, would you want to (and think it's safe to) deal with them at 30k feet & likely after a few drinks?
