If it is any consolation YQ is generally worse ex-US. That said my Avios have been giving me a 2.5-3.2 cents of value per point on short haul AA flights in econ recently (to get kid back from college).

I get that and don’t really care how it is split, my calculation is Avios plus this vs. cash fare.

Generally speaking, using avios to/from USA is a very bad value. The 'BA taxes' are just ridiculous. On the other hand using avios for some tickets that originate from Brazil and some other countries is amazing value as you usually pay less than £20.

Interesting although this obviously depends on where you want or need to go.

This time it is £850 each plus a pod of miles and a 241 for a pair of premium returns so it still
feels OK, just

I think you may want to look at booking the USA to LHR flight separately. recall the fees/taxes were much less doing it this way (maybe even with AA or Virgin?)

Flights starting in US either one-way or roundtrip usually have the highest YQ with BA and VS. So if starting outside the US you probably want to book roundtrip. If starting in the US two one-ways may indeed lower YQ. Not all oneworld carriers pass along the full YQ so always good to price with other carriers if you have the points and again check roundtrip and one-way.

Seems quite a lot more than I remember paying before.

I plan on adding the return later (probably in Club) - will this be another £550 each?
I booked Club in November to JFK return, taxes were c.£800 pp total

So with the return added it was £850.

Interesting that the return is less than the two singles with an Avios booking.

Just out of interest ... Why are the carrier imposed charges from BA so large? 1700 GBP + 100k avios for my 241 to JFK is absurd but apparantly normal now. Every other major airline is close to minimal cost plus miles. I dont understand it. Yet short haul avios bookings are minimal price. Any expert advice greatly received. Makes avios with BA unusuable when you get travel J from Doha to London in Q suites on 43k and not much money. Thanks

I have just booked LAX - DOH and return via BA but flying with QR for next spring. It was 140,000 Avios and $246.37 in taxes, fees and charges per person. Booking the same journey but travelling via London with BA on all four sectors would have been 270000 Avios + $ 2,389.17 per person. Definitely way better value with QR.

This confirms the rule of thumb: Never redeem your Avios on BA
