Taxes to JFK

Just booked a one way in F with Avios and a little surprised that taxes were £550 each.

Seems quite a lot more than I remember paying before.

I plan on adding the return later (probably in Club) - will this be another £550 each?

Looks like you got off lightly. On a paid ticket, it is showing, using ITA, taxes as GBP271.06 plus fare disguised as charges of GBP350, giving a total cost of GBP621.06

If adding an inbound flight to the same itinerary, I would expect the additional cash payment to be approx GBP25.34 in taxes plus an addition charge of GBP350 - so approx GBP375 to pay

Booked return F to ATL yesterday, £845 each in fees. Imagine it all be very similar for JFK

And if you just book an another one way back it would cost you an another£660ish plus Avios. So I’m your case it would be better to book it as a return because the total taxes for both sector would be around £840.

Just to add that I've seen LHR-JFK J revenue tickets on TAP for just over £1k a few months ago. Those would of course also give points. My avios valuation now is: don't bother, Amex cancelled.

Its edging that way for me but if the above posts are correct £850 ish for a return is still value in F.

But I agree. RFS peak is looking more and more the value option. No chance I’m paying £700 CE to Mykonos

Although if you can be bothered to position night before, exDUB is only £375

I have a deep personal hatred of that place, but purely from an avios value position it is an amazing deal!

Much better.

Though I think you hit the sweet spot. Greek islands in season in Club is probably the highest value avios redemption that can be made.

I think more generally short haul redemptions are looking like good value given their flexibility and revenue fares lately.

Just for correction: The large part of the money paid are not taxes but YQ which goes to BA.

When booked online, YQ for these awards appears to be £275 each way, £550 round-trip. Corresponding cash tickets have YQ of £350 each way, £700 round-trip. This has been discussed a number of times, and it's now been going on for so long that the difference may be deliberate:
