If you’re new to Barclaycard?? How incredibly annoying. I’ve literally just got a Barclaycard Rewards card…

BlueHorizonUK Feb 24, 2022 12:58 am

It does say they will provide an ability to swap to this using the app but need to wait until it launches.

It is quite common with Barclaycard to be able to do product swap (but for some customers it has been reported that this functionality may not be available). I have my oldest Credit Card account since 1999 with Barclaycard and I did few products swaps over time, ending up as a CashBack duo card (Amex/Visa), and later just Visa. However, I was told that Co-branded products could not be swapped to (Hilton Honours) so I ended up with a second Barclaycard product in order to get the Hilton Card, so I wonder if this will be considered a Co-branded card or simply a Barclaycard Rewards product that instead of Cash, gives you Avios. The free product could be a very interesting alternative to the HSBC Premier World Elite MasterCard, my current alternative to Amex for Avios in the few places that do not accept Amex (minus the additional LoungeKey benefit). What would make this product even better, is if it were Forex Free (like the standard Rewards Card), albeit it would probably be a Visa and thus with worst exchange rates than the MasterCard alternatives of Chase UK Debit Card (plus 1% cashback for 1 year) and Santander Zero for example.

You can swap to it but you will forfeit the bonus. Best to cancel any existing Barclaycards you have now and start the 6 month clock.

Cheers for this Rob - will cancel mine today!

Looks like a good option to switch to from a BA Amex (Blue), take the sign up bonus and start the clock on 24 months to be considered a new Amex customer again. Saying that as someone who doesn't spend enough to earn companion vouchers, and if I did spend bigger a cabin upgrade voucher may be more useful.

bristolian Feb 24, 2022 3:26 am

Do we know when this will be launched?

wilko1 Feb 24, 2022 3:40 am

Looks good.
Hopefully this means @Raffles will stop deleting all comments referencing this product over on his site now.

Do you think they’d chqrge the premier customers even more for this card?

i simply think that i the future avios will devalue a lot and it will be even more annoying to find long haul availability

Only 1 upgrade voucher per £10k/£20k spend?

Don't think the OH would appreciate me going forward and leaving her in the cheap seats :D

i would bet this will works like the Barclays Premier Avios upgrade voucher, itself a copy of the old Lloyds Avios upgrade voucher : Upgrade both ways for one on a return ticket or Upgrade for 2 on a single leg.

Radiation Station Feb 24, 2022 9:48 am

Does anyone have a link to the T&Cs for the cabin upgrade voucher? Curious to see if you can upgrade from J to F.

Why on earth would Head for Points not be all over this now it's out in the open? Sounds like their core market. I wasn't particularly interested in moving from HSBC Premier to Barclays Premier for the current account deal but I shall certainly get the Barclaycard and that may replace my HSBC Premier World Elite card.

bristolian Feb 24, 2022 2:56 pm

That means HfP gains more from collaboration with Barclays than breaking the news.
Think like this: all HfP core people are already here and they know it. All HfP can do now is to collaborate with Barclays and capitalise on this.

One assumes they have an agreement with Barclays/Barclaycard not to leak information they've been briefed on ahead of the planned launch.

Barclaycard have presumably slipped up and published pages ahead of time that they either did not mean to publish or thought weren't publicly accessible. Any agreement HfP have with Barclays/Barclaycard not to leak what they know would still need to be honoured.

The other half will move from the BA Amex to the free Barclaycard Avios card for the modest bonus and to reset the clock with Amex.

I have a year of HSBC Premier World Elite for free, but will evaluate at the end of that year whether it's worth moving to Barclaycard, depending on the overall benefits. Being a lowly Brown Bronze, lounge access is a key requirement for me.

tangey Feb 24, 2022 5:06 pm

also worth nothing that like the old lloyds avios voucher, and unlike the newer amex vouchers, these vouchers must start their journey in the UK.

HfP is mysteriously quiet this morning, I wonder if today is the official announcement of these cards?

Although beware if you have a Hilton card then once you close that, it's gone - you can't reapply. Not sure I want to lose that option for the sake of a bonus.

If you do a quick Google for 'barclaycard avios' you will see a number of promo images for the new cards hosted on HfP since Friday. Assume the info will be released later this morning with 3 x articles across the different cards.

i agree, especially the bonus for the free card is not particularly inviting

stevebintley Feb 28, 2022 3:08 am

I can’t decide whether to swap my Amex premium for the Barclays premium now! 25k Avios is tempting now I’ve earned my annual companion voucher already….

sb1982 Feb 28, 2022 3:21 am

If I have another Barclaycard that I've had for 8 years, just sitting there - it's tough to close it - good for my credit rating - so are we sure no existing Barclaycard holder will be able to get the welcome bonus if they switch to / open this card?

greenchicken Feb 28, 2022 3:31 am

If I already have a Barclarcard Premier Rewards card, can I switch to this? Would my existing points convert to Avios?

wilsnunn Feb 28, 2022 3:48 am

I am tempted by the new Barclaycard Premium card but was rather put off by paying £12 a month for premier banking Barclays Avios Rewards and then an extra £20 a month for the Barclaycard Avios Plus Card, then noticed this which does soften the blow somewhat:

Collect even more Avios with Premier Banking
If you open this Barclaycard for £20 a month and switch on Barclays Avios Rewards as a Premier banking customer for £12 a month, we’ll give you £5 back into your current account every month. T&Cs apply.

Do the `World Elite Privileges` extend to lounge access?

I don't think so, with HSBC I think that's an additional benefit for the fee. The WE privileges as best I've found means getting a status with either Hertz or Avis, can't remember which, but it meaningfully counts for nothing. Those lounges passes are very poor for UK lounges, so often you're told that lounge is at capacity so no entrance.

Exactly this. I don't think I could justify giving it up, it's free and if you go by the nominal values we tend to use then yes, the Avios is worth more than the 2x HH, but having HH points opens up opportunities that Avios doesn't, and it is possible to get outsize value, just as it is with Avios. And yeah, there's always the VS cards with the VS to HH transfer option, but it's not as good unless you have the paid card.

Raffles Feb 28, 2022 6:25 am

Except .... when a 100% bonus is running, you can buy Hilton points for just under 0.4p.

Avios, in the worse case scenario, can be cashed out via Nectar for 0.8p.

You could use the Avios for supermarket shopping via Nectar, use the money you save to buy the same number of Hilton points you'd have got from the Hilton card, and you get the BA upgrade voucher on top.

londonba2014 Feb 28, 2022 6:39 am

Seems that Barclaycard's IT is down for applications, BA and them are going to make one fine pairing..

World Elite Privileges are by subscriptions. There are many Prepaid World Elite nowadays that effectively carry no benefits at all.

HSBC Card has the Lounge access, Rewards earning and you do get status (the 6 digits bin number needs to be approved by MasterCard) with both Avis and Hertz, as well as National and Sixt.
