The initial question looks to be a load of hearsay hype.

Some articles say it's closed for entry and exit and lists exceptions e.g. for returning home etc. CW is the only article not mentioning it whereas Janet Ascombe does:

In line with FT's policies on URLs, here is the first paragraph. It starts at 00.00 hrs on 18 December for 15 days.

The only one I can see that does is the Janet Anscombe website (whoever she is?) linked by paulaf. What I'm saying is I'm somewhat unsure of claims by such sites, I've no reason to believe it (or disbelieve it) but I'd sooner wait for a more credible media source to state this before I begin to react. El País hasn't as of yet.

Thanks, I've read the article link in its entirety and while it states further social distancing measures and enforcements from 18DEC and over the festive period it doesn't say anything to the effect tourists to the island won't be permitted entry during this time.

After much confusion there's been some clarification this morning that tourists can still enter with a negative test as before.

The Government of the Canary Islands has no power on international borders. None. Zero. It's the Government of Spain that puts the conditions, restrictions and limitations to enter Spain.
Spanish border are open to UK residents - so you can enter Tenerife if you arrive on a direct/non-stop flight from the UK.
Now, the Gov of the Canary Islands has the power and legitimacy to control internal borders. That's what the have done with Tenerife. Enter/leaving the island to/from domestic air/sea connections has been restricted.
