It seems like we have quite a few are taking advantage of the recent good price on OTP-PHX so I thought it might be a good idea to see if we could put together some ad-hoc meet-ups. I don't want to organise anything as it seems that we are all travelling on different dates and, in some cases different routes, but it would be a shame to be on the same flight or in the same lounge as another FTer, not know and not be able to share a beer and stories... if that is what you want. Of course, if you like to travel alone then that is great too.

So, if you want others to know about your travel plans and fancy saying hi to fellow FTers please post your details and I will add you to the wiki. If you have wiki update access then please, by all means, update the wiki yourself

I am posting my hotel arrangements but if you would rather not do that yourself but wish to post your flights then that is also perfectly fine.

For those that want to read about the Aug 2018 PHX mini-do (quite a few did it!) it is here : https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/brit...ug-2018-a.html

There are some links at the end of the wiki to interesting things to do around Phoenix. Please feel free to add to this list if you wish

Missed the Peoples Palace last time but any other thoughts? Thanks
I like the Athenee Palace Hilton in town...very comfortable and easy access to all of the centre. Uber is cheap and easy at OTP...just go out to the car park outside once booked.

The lounge seems to be open all night and it is "mostly harmless". I wouldn't have a problem with being in there for a few hours though you need to take your own entertainment. The refreshments are a bit basic but ok. Especially if you like biscuits.

If you have luggage to check it is a bit tedious to try hanging around overnight. I did it twice (about a year ago) and the check in desk opened about 2 hours before the flight. I camped out on the bridge between the two terminals. It was VERY warm.

You couldn't give me directions from arrivals could you?

Currently booked into the Ramada Plaza but would prefer something nearer the airport and if walking is sensible then I would prefer to walk rather than wait for shuttles/taxis etc.
Have a look at google maps and streetview that gives a good idea. In real life - if you come out of the arrivals bit through the ground floor of the multi story car park and keep walking... keep on the right hand side of the dual carriageway bit that leads down to the main road until you get to the footbridge. You NEED to use the footbridge! Do not think this is a road for just nipping across. Turn left and you will get to the hotel.

In terms of safety - I would do that if arriving at tea time and if catching the morning flight to London. I don't know if I would do it if arriving around midnight (see earlier disclosure about being a little old lady).

I've done the walk on two separate trips - both times arriving ~midnight and leaving early the following morning. The walk is short - definitely use the footbridge as recommended above - but it does pass by a wooded area surrounding a car park which seems to have a lot of taxis and other people waiting in cars/hanging around at night. While it didn't seem particularly unsafe, walking through that area also doesn't fill you with feelings of warmth and safety.

Ah really good point re luggage! don't fancy that at all. Will book into a nearby hotel instead. Thanks for the warning!

I visit OTP regularly for work reasons.

A few personal tips:

- The Crowne Plaza has recently been completely refurbished and is located in a quiet spot. It’s also easy to get to the airport as you don’t have to fight through traffic.
- Located a 11 minute walk from the Crowne Plaza is a place called Beraria which apparently is Europe’s largest beerhouse. It’s stunning and has great food and live entertainment. It’s also next to a very nice lake.
- There is a thermal spa called “Therme” located a 5 minute drive from the airport. It’s only s few years old an absolutely stunning - you should check it out. The staff are usually happy to store any luggage you have while you visit. The cocktails at the bar are very very nice.
- The airport is not very good and the lounge is very poor. I usually spend as much time at Therme as possible and jump in an Uber to the airport - there are always Uber’s and Taxis around Therme.

Agreed re night time. There's a short stretch which is very dark and edged by bushes. I'm 6' 1" and I was scanning the area very carefully as I walked through.

I have done it off the late flight and there are bits that are a little dark and not for the feignt hearted... that being said I have seen people player chicken with the highway which didn’t look like a lot of fun either... I have a roller case and there are bits that are uneven to say the least!

I have avoided the late flight on to the early flight this time round so heading into Bucharest for the night this time.

I have added a section to the bottom of the wiki for links to things to do and interesting places around Phoenix. Please feel free to add to the list yourself or if you can't then post here and I (or someone else) will gladly add them in.

I notice that LondonAndy should have arrived in PHX. I wanted to ask how it was going but @LondonAndy your message box is full so I'll post it here in the hope you can reply

How is it going?
Are you alone?
Did you have any issues on the way out?
What are you doing whilst there?

I leave in about 3 weeks so getting excited!

Ah, I thought I had 1 spare message left in my inbox capacity- I’ll have to sort that out!

It’s 4AM on my first morning at Phoenix so the jet lag isn’t great, but as I’m only here for 2 full days I won’t bother trying to get completely in the right time zone.

B2B at OTP was fine (despite a post to the contrary) - see the guy at the transfer desk on the ground floor, he’ll send you upstairs to have your passport checked and then you’re let through - less than 10 minutes from plane door to departure gate.

I did the HEL shuffle too and stayed overnight to get the A350 both ways. That was good, and got to go into Helsinki for a couple of hours.

There was a 1 hour connection upon arriving at LHR to get the JFK flight, but our stand was occupied so that became 35 minutes - I was certain I wouldn’t make it but got on board 10 minutes before departure. In future with connections that short I’ll prepare contingency plans of what flights I’d like to get instead.

JFK was fine except for a scrum at Global Entry - must have taken 20 minutes to get through. Picked up my bag and dropped it off round the corner then flagship lounge, which I hadn’t been in since the refurb.

The real killer was the JFK - PHX flight as they don’t have beds, and that is when I could have done with a sleep the most! If I didn’t need the TPs I probably would have done JFK LAX PHX instead of the HEL shuffle.

I’m staying downtown and the Light Rail from the airport was easy - $2 and 20 minutes.

In terms of what to do - I’m not a huge sports fan but the Arizona Rattlesnakes are playing indoor American Football this afternoon, so I’ll go to that. The Museum of Musical Instruments has been highly recommended, and the Heard Museum may be good for a bit of culture.

Dylanks, a Phoenix based FTer said best pizza in the world at Pizzeria Bianco... the location at 20th and Camelback has more seating and less of a queue.

Hope that helps!

Thanks. Glad you made it there.

Not doing the LHR-OTP B2B but I wish I was now as I have a hotel booked in OTP overnight and the B2B would have saved me nearly £200... win some, lose some.

I am doing the JFK-LAX-PHX so perhaps that was a good call on my part but then I don't need the TPs as this will get me to Gold without the HEL shuffle.

Thanks for the tips on what to do. I shall add them to the wiki if no one has done it already

I hope you have a great time there and all your connections are good ones on the way back

Paul
