That’s very odd. I’m looking at outbound 22 Jan, return 25 Jan 2020. C £1300 taxes if from London and over £1700 (though now it’s down to c£1600 strangely) if from EDI for us both with a 241.

Agreed.. I upgraded from LHR-JFK, IAD-LHR to FIRST for a total of 40,000 Avios with no additional surcharges. I asked a BA and they stated to me that because I had purchased a CW tix the taxes have already been paid..

Sorry, I made myself unclear.
I already have a single booked UK-USA with AA.
So I was talking about my return journey to the UK, not a return ticket or the return part of a UK-USA ticket.
So Lloyds voucher good for that - except for the fees!
Should of made myself clearer!
ps Reason for delay in booking the second journey is the unpredictable arrival of another grandchild.

I have two more recent examples of ex-US applications of GUF to bookings in CW (to F). Both with different but positive outcomes:
Booking 1: Upgraded 2 sectors JFK-LHR-JFK from CW-F using A class availability. Quoted and charged $200 (expected $400).
Booking 2: Upgraded 3 sectors JFK-LHR-BOM // DEL-LHR-EWR using A class availability. Quoted and charged $0 (expected $600).
Perhaps the policy has now been reversed?

I can't immediately see why upgrading both JFK-LHR and LHR-JFK would only cost $200 instead of $400.
But for a JFK-LHR-BOM//DEL-LHR-EWR itinerary the total YQ is $1,000 for the trip whether it's in F or J. That will be why there was no extra charge for upgrading on that itinerary.

The apparent "policy" of adding $200 per sector for upgrades from Club to First simply comes from the fact that the YQ for a CW round-trip JFK-LHR-JFK is $1,200 and the YQ for a F round-trip JFK-LHR-JFK is $1,600 (and if it's Club one way and First the other, then the YQ is $1,400).
That's why I can't see why your round-trip upgrade on JFK-LHR-JFK was only $200. It should have been $400. You may have been undercharged.

I think that's how it's always been done.

Oh dear. What a shame. Never mind

Ok I must be missing something quite basic. I thought the new policy was an additional $200 per sector ex-US for upgrades CW-F but that's clearly not correct. From your response it seems that this is not always the case. So is it best to compare a CW taxes/fees to a F taxes/fees and expect to be charged the difference?

Some folks are surprised, but the only really new thing is differences between J&F. From 7 years ago:
Fuel surcharge FAR higher on 2 one-ways vs return!
To see even bigger numbers, look at LAX_LHR-BOM or other similar routings. If it's the same as back then, the YQ was based on LHR-xx or xx-LHR and was additive by LHR segment. So what's the Max YQ now on a real route? LAX-LHR-BOM I'm guessing is close to $4k.
