I've been to GIB quite a lot last few years and also spent Xmas there this year.
Can recommend the Sunborn Yacht hotel if you don't mind paying a few quid. It's a little different - you can get walk there from the airport (across the runway) and if you book a balcony room facing the airport, be there in time to catch the BA flight taking off again! Rooms are very nice and there's lots of bars and restaurants nearby. (The new HIX is not far either).
I spent Xmas at The Rock hotel. Much more traditional -nice sea views and you can walk into town or to the cable car and it's on several bus routes.

As an ex ATC er there 92-94 it has fond memories for me so Im in. Been back once in 2010. On a sunny day, the view from the top of the rock must be one of the best in Europe!
Coming from Prg via Lhr so I just need to decide whether to get a Defence Discount cheapy and sit anonymously down the back (normally 13 A /F ) or cough up avios + $$ for CE and talk to KARFA .
