Fare disparity when applying GUF2?
Hi,
I would like to book return flights from London to Singapore on specific dates in 2018, paying for two people in WTP and using a GUF2 to upgrade both to CW.
There is currently award seat availability in CW for the flights I want to book - so far so good.
Here’s the bit I don’t understand: if I do a dummy booking to buy the WTP tickets in the current BA.com sale they are priced at £648 + £465.91 taxes = £1,113.91 per person.
However, if I go through the process of redeeming my GUF2 on BA.com for the same WTP flights therefore upgrading to CW, they are priced at £1,098 + £568.91 = £1,666.91per person.
i can understand the taxes being higher if travelling in the CW cabin, but why is the base WTP fare per person £450 higher when redeeming the GUF2 as opposed to buying the WTP tickets without applying the voucher? Is it not possible to apply the GUF2 when taking advantage of the sale prices on BA.com?
Thanks

Okay, thanks for the advice. Just leaves me with the risk that the 2 remaining CW seats get snapped up in between me booking the WTP tickets and getting through to the Gold line to exercise the GUF2. If I call them before booking the WTP tickets and explain the problem, is there any chance they would protect the reward seats for a limited time?

It's also not that much of a feeding frenzy anyway, outside CPT and some Caribbean destinations, you could probably leave it a bit. And you do have the 24 hour full refund option if the push came to the shove.

Well, there is a possibility - admittedly small - that while I am booking the WTP flights someone else books the remaining CW reward seats, so when I ring the Gold line the CW seats are no longer available?

Do the whole thing in one transaction over the telephone. Yes there may be a service charge.

As noted by others, worst case scenario is you can cancel in the cooling off period.

IIRC BA have some cheap WTP fares that are actually an upgrade from an economy bucket, and therefore cannot be upgraded again from WTP to CW. I would check to make sure this is not what is happening. Again, book, phone and then cancel if you do not like the answer. All within 24 hours.
Or or just book through a TA who will not require the award space, just space in /I/. Makes it much easier and less stressful.

I think you are talking about WTP dual inventory fares (DIF)? If so these can be upgraded with avios or using a GUF. The issues is you can’t do it onlin as the website often can’t properly price it up so it seems the best option is to book the fare online and call to do the upgrade.
