Or or just book through a TA who will not require the award space, just space in /I/. Makes it much easier and less stressful.

I think you are talking about WTP dual inventory fares (DIF)? If so these can be upgraded with avios or using a GUF. The issues is you can’t do it onlin as the website often can’t properly price it up so it seems the best option is to book the fare online and call to do the upgrade.
