Thanks Karfa, that's really helpful

Thanks for this. Cost a little more due to the combination of flights I wanted but did AMS-LHR-HKG-BKK-HKG-LHR-AMS for £1477 at Easter 18. Couldn't get the BA website to price up outbound with the HKG-BKK leg (though it did offer it on inbound as an option for a simple AMS-BKK) so booked over the phone with an exceptionally helpful agent ("have you been looking at matrixita" he asked).

Links nicely with Avios flights booked for the family.

F outbound on the 789 and return on the 777. KUL to BKK was MH, with CX to SIN. Added in a stopover in SIN, which pushed the price up slightly, but still a great deal at £1,370 each.
Would you mind sharing the google flights routing link for this? Sounds like a great deal with F on the way out!

Yes, correct. I used a GUF on this one. Apologies that wasn't clear in the original post.

Did you apply the GUF on this by calling BA?

I'm looking for some inspiration, if any is to be had... my wife and I ar trying to get to CPT for about a week in October - leaving on/after 16th and back by 29th. Could do an open-jaw JNB one end and CPT the other, but would prefer to avoid a simple JNB return.

The last time we went to South Africa, we did an exEU AMS-LHR-JNB very successfully, but this time I'm struggling to find anything less than about £2,000 per person. I did see QR's TUN deal mentioned in the wiki, and decent prices are available on ITA (£1,320 if we do an open-jaw, £935(!!) round-trip JNB). However, I'm not so keen to go to TUN and I'm not sure I could convince my wife.

Are there any start/end points I might not have considered which would be a bit easier than TUN? Or should I just wait and see what other offers QR might have?

Basic problem is that BA doesn't have any I-class availability. As such, you're going to struggle with getting a good fare anywhere.

Positioning on IB code, VY metal via BCN for £130 OW isn't too bad.

I'm also seeing a LHR-TUN return on AZ for ~£140

BRU-CPT on QR with some pretty rough timings is coming in at about £1,700 for your dates.

I don't know why I hadn't found those ones... I think I was just missing the dates in my search. It's a bit pricey for me (although, once you consider how much cheaper it is to position to BRU than TUN it might make sense...)

AMS-HKG - €1,559
LUX-HKG - €1,481 (note LUX is a LHR T3 route)

Just to note that long running AMS-BKK advanced purchase fare (INCEU60) is €1,433 . Also worth noting BRU-PVG is €1,437 and LUX-PVG is €1,412 and these are under the INCSALE fare. There is a lot of potential for some good open jaw routings combining some of these fares, so you could do AMS-LHR-HKG/BKK-LHR-AMS and just use avios on CX/KA to go in between.

Some detail of this AMS-HKG INCSALE fare.
