** AA Domestic First on two cabin will earn business TPs and avios for departures on or after 11 January 2017 - see reference posts for more details **

** Note that the practice of AA Domestic 3-class service flights booking into A for 210 TPs when I was no longer available ceased in September 2017. Discussion here. **

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Have tried inputing the exact flights on ba.com or aa.com and have also tried expedia. Absolutely no joy.

Is there something wrong with the interface? Has a lot of flight info been loaded incorrectly?

I'm a bit of a novice at this and starting to feel like it's a bit of a bad joke. All these so called great fares but you can't book any of them...
Having the same issue can see it on the matrix but cannot get it on AA.com

Silly question, might be booking an outbound in WTP and the choice of inbound in C or F,(only £500 difference) if I'm booking it as an F bucket LAS-PHL-LHR can I still get the LAS-PHL leg in an F fare bucket that gives 210 tier?

No, the LAS-PHL is a two-class service so only the J/D/I etc buckets and 140 TPs.

There is no F/A/P selling classes on AA domestic two class flights either under AA prime number or BA codeshare. 210/60 TPs is impossible on a two class AA domestic flight!

Did anyone actually manage to book an OTP-LHR-JFK-LAX-PHX return or a MAN-HEL-ORD-x-SAT/OKC return?

I could get them both to price up fine on ITAMATRIX this morning but they have both basically gone tonight (MAN was due to expire 29/3 and OTP was due to go until 3 April).

When I tried to book via bookwithmatrix it priced up on aa.com but needed a US credit card - changing the card country to UK crashed the booking. Calling AA to book over the phone was a total waste of time - 6 city pairs only, like the website, and couldn't match my itinerary

Seriously frustrating. This is a regular occurrence with special deals - do they exist only in the world of ITAMATRIX??

AA seemed to remove the MAN-SAT fare from most POS early this afternoon (UK time). I was monitoring a routing with a plan to book it this evening; and was caught out by this.

Thankfully Daniel @ Propeller was able to find the same fare via Toronto POS, at the same rate as Matrix...

Not sure if this is the same issue but I'm having a frustrating time trying to book MAN-JFK-LAX-SAT-LAX-JFK-MAN.

It prices up as expected on google flights, at around 1340 euros, and sends me through to AA's UK site to make the purchase, but I'm based in Spain and I'd like to pay with a credit card with a Spanish address. It won't let me do this, and forces me over to the Spanish site, where I just can't get the itinerary at all.

It will let me book a straightforward MAN-SAT return on the Spanish site, again for the expected price of about 1200 euros, but I really wanted the convoluted itinerary for the extra tier points.

Guess I could just pay with a UK card, but if anyone has any bright ideas of how to get the itinerary up on the Spanish AA site, please shout

I used a UK card on the German AA site, maybe that'll take your Spanish card.

Thanks dougzz.

Amazingly, I checked the German site and it did indeed come up with almost the right itinerary!

Inspired, I went back to the Spanish site and it now also gives me almost exactly what I want, putting in all the different multi-city pairs (which didn't work at all an hour or so ago).

So thanks! Will now go ahead and book.

While I was pondering my choices the price went up, so no. This was compounded by managing confuse the time I had the fare via HEL on hold for (EEST aka Eastern European Summer Time is not the same as EST aka Eastern Standard Time) but it would have been such a slog I am telling myself this was a lucky escape.

This morning I can get OTP-LHR-JFK-LAX-PHX-LAX-JFK-LHR-OTP on aa.com via Google flights to come up at US$1631 for 22-29 Nov. This time yesterday it was US$1516 for 25 Nov - 12 Dec which is really the sort of dates I was after. Today that is over US$2000.

However, out of idle curiosity, I looked at some random dates in August (when wild horses would not drag me to Phoenix) and 01 to 08 Aug via LHR and PHL can be had from ba.com via Google flights for 1280 euros which it says is equivalent to £1108. Might appeal to anyone who wants 720TPs rather than to spend time in the Arizona outdoors.

Here is what you can do:

1. Check if it is possible to put the booking on hold at the last step. If so, put on hold and call AA to change the currency. You can then pay over the phone in the other currancy. Ask them to waive the booking fee. Often they are able to do so.

2. Book with ITA matrix and place on hold in the US AA site. They offer the hold. Then call AA hotline as described above.

Hope this helps

Great to know that, Shl. I managed to sort it this time after a lot of trial and error (see above) but I will try holding it next time and booking over the phone.

Hi AlphaXray, unfortunately not.

Looking at mid May, for 10 days max, with a few days in LA (I definitely need to be there on the weekend of 20/21 May), then some time in Vegas or SFO. Pretty flexible as long as I'm in LA on that weekend. Ideal departure would be around 17th. I know I can still get the MAN-SAT fare but once I factor in SAT-LAX return in business class the total price becomes less of a bargain. Plus the flight times / connection times with SAT-LAX are not ideal especially if I end up in Vegas.

Hi guys,

So I managed to find a OTP-LHR-HEL-JFK-LAX-PHX and return itinerary on ITA for 6804 RON, but when I use bookwithmatix it gets priced at 1795$ on Priceline, roughly 175$ more expensive, given the current exchange rate of 1$=4.21 RON
Is there a way to overcome this?

How do you manage to get it priced on AA, though? It gives me a system error when I click on the link bookwithmatrix provides. Also, is it better to have BA codes on BA metal than AA ones? I suppose it gets you a bit more Avios.

Thank you,

S
