New Route Announcement: LGW-OAK Oakland, California, starting March 28, 2017

LGW-OAK, 4 days a week from Summer 2017 operated by 777-200ER, from this source: http://travelskills.com/2016/11/01/b.../#.WBi-sk1XX4Y

But (at the time of this post) - nothing bookable on the BA website ...

So - blogger who has gone too early on an announcement or just some idle gossip?

It's loaded now. BA2279 out, BA2278 back, looks to be daily by the summer.

This seems to be a predatory move pure and simple. I cannot imagine this route making viable sense on its own. To LHR? Maybe. But to LGW without the connecting options? Very unlikely.

Yes, just like Fort Lauderdale. I personally doubt that they will manage to scare DY off, and I think it is more likely that with SFO, SJC, and OAK, they will likely just cannibalise their own market. I'd expect far more premium award seats to be available to the Bay area next summer compared to the historically very rare opportunities to use miles to California.

OH MY GOD. THE FARES:

The route will be served by a 777-200ER aircraft operating four-days a week, with flights launching from £189 each way based on a return fare in World Traveller, £448 in World Traveller Plus and £998 in Club World available to book on ba.com

Excellent!

Can't wait for an opportunity to buy dollars with my pounds at parity.

But why are they trying to take market share from Norwegian? They can’t compete on price on any route in any class and the target customer seems very different between the two airlines.

Or is this about undercutting and losing money on routes until competitors give up and move out? I can’t see Norwegian giving up anytime soon – their cost base must be extremely low to be able to consistently offer such low fares.

What other US destinations do Norwegian serve that BA don’t?

Sorry, I may be being slow, but where are these J return fares for £998? Have had a brief look but I can't see them.

From Gatwick I think only BOS, LAS and LAX now. DY also serve Puerto Rico I think too, so BA has a lot of work to do to get them out of LGW I reckon

SinoBritAsia mentioned it's the price each way based on round trip, so £1996 return!
