Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

The question is, what's the most efficient way of booking it on a UK credit card? I remember seeing somewhere on FT that you can pretend it's a US card to avoid a dodgy exchange rate, but now can't find the details of how to do it...

Hopefully some of you have more experience of booking domestic US itineraries than me! Any tips?
I've had success in using a UK card by squeezing all of my UK address into the first couple of lines of the address box and then putting a real US town (and perhaps State - can't remember if that's required or not) and ZIP Code for that town in the appropriate boxes.

Thanks to a helpful poster here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/premi...l#post26484608), I think those doing the CDG-PUJ run can add to the TP collection as DFW-PUJ seems to be a >2000 miles as well. 140TPs of course, not 210.

Maybe KARFA can confirm, as ba.com doesn't give any TPs for the route.

You can indeed add more TPs but I figured a balance between easy travel and TPs was wanted. The TP max route is here.

There is also a trick to end in DUS but of course it should never be done....

You can also start from BLL, but I believe CPH is easier to get to. Although I found that one company offers direct flights between BLL and DUS. It is BA....
Thanks guys for your help so far. I am currently tending towards a trip starting from CPH. It seems that I can book it via the AA.com website, however I have a question around the class this will book me in. For the three US flights which are in First it is saying Business/First Class as Tarif/Class. Will I earn the First class or Business Class tier points for those ?

You should not book it like that. Try building it from scratch on aa.com. I have noticed the same with the SEA route. It should be First.

After a couple of tries the link between Google Flights and AA.com was working now and I put a hold on the ticket now. Please see the screenshot for the details. It only says First Cabin now. Do you think it is safe to book that one ? When I start a booking on aa.com regardless of if coming from the German or Danish page it shows me Business/First as fare and class.

Yep. Looks fine. You cannot always pay on the US site with a non-US credit card but you can either

a) call AA to make payment for the flight you reserved.
b) use AMEX and borrow someone's address in the US (a hotel)
c) if you don't have amex, type your correct address (all of it) in the first line and use a fake city/zip.

It is explained in this thread or the Premium Fares thread by someone.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Smile Thank you

Quick O/T thank you to those who've helped me in the BA forum and this thread in particular. Adding the odd sector (or two) to trips has helped me move up to Gold four months into my membership year instead of just missing out as I did for the last couple of years.

Thank you!

Hi there,

I am looking on trying to do a TP run to Silver and looking for some EDI / GLA ideas.

Or is what I have good value?

I have so far EDI > LGW > MAD > ALC > MAD > LGW > GLA they are all Iberia I / J fares and earning me a total of 160 TPs the total for this is ~ £400 is this good value? Roughly works out at £2.20 A TP.

Availability for me is really weekends and before the 1st week in June. Although I could maybe do a week day if its cheaper.

Is anyone able to come up with a better collection run for 160 TP within my timeline? Ideally a Same Day SAT or SUN or a SAT & SUN if possible.

I have literally been looking for 3 days and I am struggling to find anything cheaper, I really am not fussed where I go / end up but ideally GLA / EDI as the first and last step (unless there is a ridiculous cheap fare elsewhere and I can easyjet home haha.

Many thanks guys ! I really appreciate it

On first principles, get a TP at £2.20 on short haul sectors in Europe is tricky, though not impossible. It's easier from certain start points such as LHR, from GLA and EDI the options can narrow somewhat. The Saturday Night rule will also impose a constraint. So given your start point, I doubt you will manage to improve massively on that. If you had a trip to the USA then getting to £1 per TP, or even lower, is less difficult.

So yes, if you spend a lot of time on this you may be able to shave a few quid off this, but ALC is an interesting place to visit, great bars and restaurants away from the beach area, so why not?

From a quick ITA I could see a number of similar Spanish locations for similar sums. Note that a direct from London at £297 for 120 TPs is in the same general price league but easier to do.

I could also see GLA-LHR-MAD-VLC-MAD-LHR/LGW-GLA for £335.45, so £2.10 per TP, out Sat 21 May depart 12:10, back 22 May depart 13:35, but I've only spent a very quick 5 minute look at this, there may be better offers. It looks like 2 night visits are easier to find for this price. VLC is a very interesting town, and is well connected to the airport via metro.

Can I improve on this run?

Hi all

Bit of a lurker here, sorry.

I've managed to stay gold for many years just with normal business travel. That is until the end of the last membership year when working mainly in the UK with little time off meant I dropped to silver.

My next project doesn't start for a few weeks and is unlikely to provide enough travel to return silver never mind get me back to Gold. So I'm looking to do a run to at least get me to silver or even, depending on cost get me to Gold (or close to it) as I could possibly do another run before Feb 17.

I really need to travel Monday to Friday, w/c 16 or 23 May, live in London and ready to position myself (on a Sunday if required) anywhere reasonable. I'd prefer to keep the cost excluding hotels under £1000 for silver and maybe double that for Gold.

Been researching all week although getting a hang of how to find the best routing etc feels like a black art for a novice.

Thanks to this thread I'm ready to book this one.

http://goo.gl/flights/ZKW0

If there are any other suggestions I'd be really grateful.

Cheers

Hi All, hope everyone is good!

I have just signed upto this forum after looking into how I can retain my BAEC Gold which expires on the 8th July 2016. I'm going to be 360 TPs short by doing my calculations and I'm looking into how I can get those before then.

I've read this thread for a good few hours and still trying to get my head around the acryonms and everything else (never done this before) so apologies but I have done a lot of 'searching' already and understand that an exEU flight is better than flying out of say Heathrow or Gatwick (gatwick is nearest to where I live).

I'm on the aa.com multi city tool now but just trying to work out best plan. If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Andy

andyhud welcome to FlyerTalk and especially to the BA branch. I hope you stay around, as you can see lots of helpful (and, at times, argumentative ) people around who possess great knowledge on all things BA and flying.

I'm sure a resident TP guru will be along shortly with an answer to your query.

Welcome ^

From the wiki at the top of the thread, OSL-HEL-AGP-HEL-OSL looks like your best bet -- £470 for 360TPs depending on dates. It's bookable directly on finnair.com.

I really appreciate it
This can be had for £330

This one is long running and is either around £270 starting at LHR or £330-360 staring from the regions. I have found that the following destinations are covered - AGP, BIO, BCN, ALC, and SVQ. Just needs a Saturday night but can be done in one weekend starting on Saturday morning and back home on Sunday evening.

The other obvious flights for 160 TPs are a return on a shorthaul+ route (list in posts 1 & 2). LGW ones tend to be cheaper. From LHR HEL is usually around £380 and can be done with a Saturday night stay. Also AY have started an EDI-HEL route which should get 80 TPs in J each way, but I suspect price wise this may be expensive.
