Qatar take 9.99% stake in IAG (BA Owners)

Breaking this morning - Qatar are taking a 9.99% stake in BA (and Iberia's) owners, IAG.

More to follow, no doubt ...

Does BA have any codeshares with QR at the moment? I can see some strategic benefits to both.

Perhaps a further sign of alliance integration? Near 10% is a sizeable stake.

A strange time to swoop...when IAG is at or near an all-time peak price!

"Near 10%" is the most they can have under EC rules. They would probably have bought more if they were allowed.
This appears to be completely about access to/from North America through LHR.

I, for one, would be delighted if QR got rights from LHR to NA

I don't think 10% is the maximum. e.g. Delta owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic.

You must not have read the article.

A non-EU entity can hold, at most, 49% of a European airline (hence Etihad owns 49% of Alitalia; Delta owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic; etc)

Another alternative slant is QR accessing North and South America via Iberia rather than via LHR.

QR would be an interesting partner for flights to Australia now that QF have teamed up with Emirates. However, QR do not have that many flights to Oz.

Maybe they felt they needed to move fast before BA cut the number of Avios that they would earn on the purchase...

Did IAG issue new shares, or was this stake bought on the market?

Seems weird there has not been much movement in the price if bought on the market?

Probably bad news for IAG staff
“If you did not have unions you wouldn't have this jobless problem in the western world… It is caused by unions making companies and institutions uncompetitive and bringing them to a position of not being efficient,” Akbar Al Baker
