RTW + Tier Points + BAEC

Hi all,

So I'm finally achieving an ambition I've had for a long time and heading out on a RTW [well if you can't do it for your honeymoon, when can you?]

I've plotted the following

LHR-SIN-SYD-AKL-PPT-IPC-SCL-LAX-SFO-LHR

Apparently it *just* squeezes into the 34k limit of tier 3, so we can go on a D ticket.

According to the booking which I can now see in my BAEC, this will generate 680 tier points. So my question is... when would I actually *become* a silver? At the end of the trip once I flew back into LHR of would it kick in before then? As we're flying business, I don't suppose it makes much difference as I don't think there would be any other silver benefits I wouldn't get as a paying D ticket customer?

Also is there anything I could do to generate MORE tier points than the 680 the booking is showing?

TIA...

The biggest benefit I can see is the extra Avios earning uplift (25% -> 100%) when you get to Silver. Silver status would normally kick in 2 or 3 days after crossing 600 TPs and 4 eligible flights thresholds. This generally happens automatically but it's good to check a week or so after flying.

as CWS says, it's when you cross the 600 mark.

your profile states that you are already silver (?) so not sure if you are starting from 0 TP balance or with a balance. if it's currently 8 and the trip earns 680, then your status wouldnt be updated until after you are back in the UK (your final flight earning 140 TPs).

if you have a balance higher than 0, you'll turn silver 2-3 days after cross 600 so depending on how long your trip is, you might turn silver mid-trip.

If you are already close ish to 600, you might want to *consider* doing a Tier Point run to get across the threshold to silver as earning 100% Avios (rather than 25%) on your LHR - SIN - SYD sector could be quite rewarding for you depeding on your travel patterns and likely use of the Avios.

either way, have a fantastic trip. a RTW trip is definitely on my bucket list.

Add more segments, for example changing SFO-LHR to SFO-JFK-LCY would add 210 TP's.

My honeymoon was a day return to Doncaster so somewhat different. But that was a long, long time ago and nowadays a RTW trip sounds like an excellent idea.

In fact I'm looking at doing a RTW in a couple of years before we get too ancient so will be interested in any advice you get here. One difference is that I was thinking of going in the other direction via South America. Opinion seems divided on the issue so will be interested in any thoughts on whether it should go west or east.

If you want advice or information on Oneworld round the world (Oneworld Explorer and Global Explorer) and circle products you should visit the Oneworld forum and do some reading:

Guys, thanks for all your suggestions and comments, much appreciated!

I haven't updated my profile for a while, and due to change in job ended up losing my silver [my choice, apart from that one downside!] and haven't bothered with BA for a while, as bronze=no lounge access=pretty much no point...Anyway, be nice to have it back and am looking to add some of your suggestions in, so cheers and will let you know how it all goes!

Oh, one more thing - any idea what the going rate for purchasing a global explorer via a travel agent is? I've been quoted 300 quid a pop, which doesn't help to what already is a pretty expensive outing. Is there any better way of getting something like this booked up?

Cheers

Why don't you just call BA and book it directly with them?

Also, in case you are not aware, your departure point makes a HUGE difference to the fare. If you were to get a cheap flight to somewhere like Cairo (which i seem to remember is one of the cheaper departure points), it could save literally thousands on the RTW fare.

Indeed, a DGLOB34 ex CAI is currently 4,076 (GBP equivalent) before tax and surcharges compared to 6,200 ex UK. From memory, Egyptian air taxes can be pretty hefty. Next best alternative, and easier for positioning, is ex OSL for 4,958++.

If it's a Oneworld RTW ticket why not book online at Oneworld.com?

You can only book Oneworld Explorer tickets online at the Oneworld website. OP is looking to purchase a Global Explorer ticket.

It may take a few days for the flight to post and then it usually takes a couple of days for your status to update. So technically, no. I guess you could always ask.

What about starting in Paris? CDG?

Where do you find the prices of the tickets from certain departure points?

Thanks...
