Yes, "744" is the IATA code for a 747-400 aircraft. If BA is selling First on a route, that route will normally have an aircraft with the New First cabin. Only if there is some difficulty which requires an unexpected aircraft substitution would an Old First cabin be used. See http://www.ftdashboard.net/flight/ba209.htm for some recent history and http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...light=tracking for some more details.

The 777's First cabin will feel more spacious, but the layout of a First cabin in the nose section (Zone A) of a 747 has an iconic quality to it.

Indeed, the 744's cabin is generally more private and is quieter, due to the lack of a forward galley resulting in nobody passing through the cabin.

Yes, one of the key benefits and great on night flights particularly.

Booked to go to JNB both ways on a 744. Originally planned to try 1a/k on the outbound and 2a/k on the return but now managed to switch my return to an A380 (2k booked)!

Now I have a dilema for the outbound. Also currently booked in 2K but 1A is open (and I believe will open to non Golds at T-72 which isn't far off)

Stick or twist?!

Thanks for the info from everyone who chimed in. I Appreciate it! So, I'm booked in F from PHL to LHR on a 777-200 and then LHR to MIA on a 747-400 (744). I managed to snag 2A/K (wife and I) in the 747 and 2K/3K in the 777. I will report back on each flights/preference, which will occur in late fall. I am hoping that at T-72 I could get the 1A/K for both of us on the 747-400 &777.

You already have the best seats on the B777, why would you want to change to two seats on opposite aisles?

Don't change on the 777 - 1A/K aren't next to each other, you have 1E/F in between you. Plus they're up by the galley.

I'd stay where you are or take 2E/F if you want to sit next to each other

I wasn't planning on changing the 2K/3K on the 777.

Yes, I am staying put on the 777 since I realized that 2A and 2K are not beside each other, so we agreed it's best to be seated close by (one in front and one behind). I also understand that in the 747, 2A and 2K are the next to the best seats (1A/1K) if traveling as a couple. This is if both want window seats.

Many think that 2A and 2K are better seats than 1A and 1K anyway, although there are a few disadvantages for a couple.

A bit like the gentleman above I have 2k/3k on a 777 to BOS and 2a/2k on a 774 to LHR. Will take 1a/1k if possible at T-24 on the 774.

I understand that these are arguably to be the 'best' seats in the cabins, I just wondered why 2k/3k on the 777 is meant to be better than 2a/3a? Surely they're pretty much the same just 'flipped'?

What's the reason?

On a 777, there isn't one good seat.

As for disadvantages for a couple, maybe the advantage IS not being seated next to each other.

All about opinions of course but, I'm sorry, that's absolute rubbish.

Can I ask why that is?

I know on the 12F version there's the crew bunk so fewer seats means fewer pax so presumably less 'going on'. On the 14F surely they get up to the toilet, get served food etc the same amount as the LHS?
