Does anyone know what BAs plans are for the 787-10. Is it replacing something?

My guess is you may find them initially operating non-ER B772 routes

They were originally ordered to replace some of the 86J 747s wth the A350 replacing the 52J 747s but they've since ordered the 777X to replace some 747s as well so they're going to have more longhaul capacity shortly.

Does anyone know yet if they will have a First cabin? I guess we can assume they will have the new Club Suite

When they were ordered they said they would have First, but that was back in 2013.

A quote from the time:

"But there is an option for us to convert some of the 787-9 orders to 787-10s, and first class makes sense in the -10" van der Post told Australian Business Traveller.

"We have a lot of long distance flights to premium destinations where we need a four-class configuration, and the -10 gets a lot closer to the capacity of the Boeing 747."

Seems like they’re going to be 1:1 replacement for some of the super high J 747’s while the A350’s are the Mid J replacements and the 777X fills in the rest.

that would be a near 50% reduction in J seats.........so that rules 787-10 and 351 out of the JFK route surely.

Something is going to have to replace the 747s. I think you’ll find the 787-10 doing some JFK services. Will be one of the most premium aircraft. (Also no cabin crew rest so won’t go to destinations further than the G-VIIx fleet.) The 777X will likely do some rotations too, although too Y heavy maybe? Or they just need the seats?

I would be surprised to see A350 in 3 class to JFK. Far too Y heavy I think. The A350 likely a lot of the 52J 747 routes in the long run. Although I’m sure it’ll be quite fluid on what aircraft go where.

The interesting fleet for me will be the bulk of the 777-200ER replacements that aren’t ordered yet. Maybe 787-10 and A350-900 mix for the VIIx and YMMx respectively? And to see what configurations they go to would be interesting to see.

I definitely expect to see it on JFK/EWR has similar config to the 777-200ER which operates a lot of JFK. Also perfect distance for the 787-10

777-200ER replacement. By bet is on A350-900 as well given BA has 36 options for the A350. Currently they have 6 options for the 787-9 but that can be moved to the -10 if needed so I see that happening

It's strange how there's so little known or speculated about the 787-10s compared to the months of speculation and snippets of info regarding the A350.

Looking at Uresh's 787 spreadsheet (All things 787) BA's first -10 is Line number 956 which, at the current rate of 14 aircraft a month, puts delivery in January. In the past he had the estimated delivery dates listed up to a year in advance but he doesn't appear to get that info anymore so I'm just guessing. His sheets currently only go up to LN 1000 and ZBLA is the only one listed so far so the second will be at least three months later. I would have thought Routesonline would have had info on where the -10 is heading already but there's nothing at the moment.

Could we see an increase in 77W on JFK next year, maybe instead of 787-10, or as well as? 4 new frames arriving next year along with the first 6 787-10. I know those are supposed to be replacing the 3 777-200 G-ZZZ* leaving the fleet, but I assume not necessarily on the exact routes? Does anyone know what the 77W cabin configuration will be going forward, i.e the new frames + existing ones once converted with Club Suite?

New and refurbished 77Ws will have the same 8F/72J/48W/136Y configuration - so very premium-heavy. I think it's a fair bet we'll see these cropping up more and more on the JFK route as Hi-J 744s are retired, particularly once the new First cabin is announced. JFK is one of the few routes that can sustain a very regular 4-class operation.

Details on 777 refurbishments and their configurations are here: LGW & LHR selected 777s go 10-abreast (3-4-3) in Y 2018 onwards
