LHR security and iPads

At the T5 security queue, even though the signs clearly state laptops must be removed from bags, they are shouting at people to remove their iPads too.

As I think a certain percentage of the flying public, maybe the elderly ones, do not know what an iPad is, I wonder what they are thinking when they are told to remove their iPads?

Very odd - I went through a couple of times in December and kept the iPad in with no problems (this was at South Security).

Will report back on Saturday...

To be clear, my experience was before Christmas, probably when a lot of people were bringing Apple presents from America. I too will pass through again soon and see if they still do this.

I flew from T3 in mid Nov with an iPad still factory sealed in the box. They didnt ask me to remove it just put the box (still inside of an apple store bag) into one of the xray trays and away I went without any issue.

I kept mine in the last time and the security chap took my bag aside after it had been scanned, opened it, took the iPad out, and put both the bag and iPad through the scanner again.

I didn't mind. If it prevents another 9/11, then I'm all for it.

forgive my ignorance on how xray machines work, but why do laptops and now iPads need to be removed? can the xray not see them in bags

Yes, they can, but for added clarity of the image of the laptop/iPad they are better going through separately.

Guess that makes sense. Might be hard to distinguish 2 laptops or a laptop and iPad on top of each. Suppose what harm does it do, adds maybe an extra few minutes at security.

Thanks.

Do they also shout out to remove Android tablets, Galapagos tablets or the multitude of other tablet based ebook devices?

.... sigh!

I was gonna say that I once had to take my DS out even though I can't recall which airport this was at.
