How has LGW faired in the past vs LHR during strike action (worse or better)?
Was off to MCO in CW 1st Jan with kids for Disney.

I was planning on flying to ATH from 22-26 December so obviously rather nervous about (a) getting there and (b) getting back.

From past experience, does anyone have a feel for how many international flights are likely to be affected if the strike goes ahead? Is it 'forget it, nothing will fly' or 'most services will limp along', or somewhere in between?

Also, quite frankly if I was WWW, I wouldn't pay the hotel bill for the crews over Christmas (because, if they're on strike, they're not working and so why should BA foot the bill?). . .

It's a shame, but this sort of stupid 1970's 'British Leyland' mentality is the reason that I have gone from Gold to not having taken a BA flight in 18 months.
I'm not sure what you're getting at. Are you saying that BA should pay the hotel bills for their crew DTL during a strike?

Traditionally BA has put more priority on getting long-haul flights out but at the moment it's anyone's guess to be honest...

From BA website

Cabin crew strike ballot - dates announced

We are aware that Unite, the trade union that represents British Airways' (BA) cabin crew, has announced that its strike ballot has closed with a vote in favour of industrial action between December 22, 2009 and January 2, 2010.

We are currently reworking our flight schedules for the strike period and aim to announce them as quickly as possible.

Our intention is to inform affected customers directly if we have their e-mail address or by SMS text if we have their mobile phone number.

We will use the contact details supplied at the time of booking, so we ask customers to please ensure these are correct and up-to-date:

My friend is supposed to be in the UK on 1/5/10. Oy veh!

No, I said if I were WWW, I wouldn't pay the hotel bills for DTL crew during a strike. They could, of course, do what the poor punters have to do and book a flight (at their own expense) with another carrier to get home during the Christmas period. . .

Bit of a dog-leg but Qatar have good prices in F at the moment, and they knock spots off BA!

All LHR flights have been pulled from the BA.com booking engine.

LGW and LCY flights have not. This would seem to suggest that the action will be LHR only.

In addition, some of the changes to conditions being voted on involved changing over to the crewing system already used at LGW.

Indeed....I suppose it's only FT nature to think of maximising an opportunity and get something for nothing.
However for the vast amount of people travelling (or not) miles and tier points certainly won't be on their minds.

We're short on official news, understandably, most of the lurkers are keeping their heads low - so we can only see what's out there and make our best guesses from that. While I'd never be categorical that LGW won't be affected absent official confirmation - it just seems unlikely given the causes for the strike and the booking engine amendments!

Good luck, and I hope I'm correct
