Impact of extended lockdown on BA June schedule

He suggested the 12 weeks Boris proclaimed at the outset would be more realistic - and even then its not guaranteed that non-essential travel would be included in phase one of the relaxation. Plus, of course, the rest of the world has to open its borders and relax quarantine rules - and thats a totally unknown timescale.
Grant Shapps got a lot of flak for saying last week he wouldnt be booking a summer holiday but sadly too many people are still in denial.

Mr TL and the children seem quite optimistic that we will be having our Greek holiday come mid-August.
They seem to have overlooked the fact that
a) BA may not be running flights to EFL by then
b) Greece may not be open to UK visitors by then
c) that our villa owners themselves have managed to get into Greece from Dubai to open up
I on the other hand remain to be convinced that well be going anywhere before Christmas

You're quite right. Id completely forgotten about travel insurance. Luckily Id held off booking car parking and car hire, so were only in for the deposit on the villa and the avios of the flights

I think you'd be ok on the medical front (for now and until the end of the year) due to EHIC, but everything else, forget it. If you booked before the FCO advisory I suspect your (good quality) insurance should refund you the deposit if you can't travel because of an advisory. But it's worth checking.

The starting point these days is to understand that as Covid-19 is entirely known, both travel insurance and future waivers may be much less forgiving. E.g., if the flight operates but you do not fit the criteria for traveling at origin, connections or destination, you may well be SOL. This means that one must be prepared to accept 100% of the risk going forward.
With that said, if BA had an inkling of what June looked like, it would lock its schedule in. But, BA does not because nobody does. Moreover, even if the legal restrictions are relaxed, it may well be many months before many people are prepared to travel other than for essential reasons. Thus, demand may be "soft" for as long as 18-24 months.
One ought to book what one feels comfortable booking, whilst paying close attention to all aspects of risk, who bears it and what policies remain in effect.

It's HSBC Premier so I'd hope so. To be honest if the owners are stuck in Dubai, I'd see if they could hold over the deposit to the same dates next year first.

The informed view is that a virus, if one is developed and found to be successful, will not be widely available for between 12 to 18 months. Or the virus mutates, or no vaccine is properly developed. The only informed effective measure to stop the spread is quite literally to stop the spread.

That's true of everywhere. I don't really understand this argument. It seems like people think this WuFlu is all a big hoax. If there were crocodiles and roaming freely around London streets would you make the same argument? Well, we've had enough of this lockdown, perhaps they're not so nasty or hungry after all.

I've tended to agree, mid to late May, and back to fully open early June. But the problem at the moment is the wider public believe that we should wait for a vaccine and that anything else is tantamount to murder and profit before people.
Whislt that's wholly impractical and untrue, I can see this lockdown lasting longer than it should because of uninformed public outcry

This place is nuts at times.

Or maybe it's realistic. At some point we're gonna have to get on with our lives. There may not be a vaccine against Covid19 discovered. There aren't any for any other forms of Coronavirus that affect humans. We may have to just adapt and accept x amounts of deaths each year, just as we do with other respiratory diseases and viruses. After all, there's an influenza vaccine eeach year in the UK and we still get up to 10,000 deaths from it.

I can see the arguments on both sides, but ultimately there comes a point where peoples assessment of risk changes with time, and so plans and policies have to change. There appears to be broad support for the measures currently undertaken to help stop the spread. The question is ..for how long ? People are generally supportive, but ask them if theyd be willing to have most of the measures in place for another 6 months ....well Im not sure what the response would be then.
I dont think you can lock people in their homes indefinitely, or until a vaccine comes along...if it comes along.

Perhaps I'll pick a slightly different argument to make. There are around 80,000 smoking-related deaths in England every year. Very roughly speaking, coronavirus might be in the same ballpark in terms of risk and mortality. We manage, but do not ban, smoking, andt people might start to think that coronavirus should be put in the same category - take the risks if you want to.

I think some holidays will resume by September/October. If nobody flies or takes a holiday this year, the travel industry and economy will be hit so hard that they will be in tatters by 2021. We arent all going to wait for a vaccine because that could be mid to late 2021 and people will be travelling by then.
