Changes to UK security after recent NW incident?

There's already a thread in TS/S about the NW terrorist incident so anything directly relating to that or the TSA reaction should post there.

What do you think the UK's reaction to this will be? Will they temporarily ban carryons like they did initially during the liquids fiasco.

Hopefully any changes made will have minimal affect on pax, the last thing the UK airline industry needs is another reason not to fly.

It will finally lead to the adoption of a policy (US and UK) requiring each passenger to be strip-searched before boarding, and to wear a non-flammable hosptial gown for the duration of the flight.

I hope it leads to proper passenger profiling and subsequent screening as if this had been in place this particular character (according to the reports of his antecedence) would have been body searched.

I'm in Gatwick at the moment (Club lounge - they wouldn't let me take my wife/daughter into the First lounge [despite it being absolutely, and I mean completely, no guests at all, empty] - I'll go in later with my daughter when my wife goes shopping.

They have announced extra screening on all US bound flights. About 1 1/2 hour delays I believe.

Why do you think El Al have no reported incidents? They, AFAIK, do full passenger profiling and before you even get to check in you get grilled by two staff. One actually asking the questions and one standing back and watching your reactions. There's none of this damn fool PC. They recognise the threat and do the most they can to stop undesireable PAX travelling!

El Al security works because they target and divide all passengers into different categories. They blatantly target people (Arabs, muslims, people who have visited arab/muslim countries etc etc) without thinking twice about being politically correct etc etc.

UK/US security will never be as good as Israeli because of laws which prevent targetting of certain ethnic/nationilities etc etc. There will always be a loophole to exploit.

From ba.com:
The United States government has revised its security arrangements for all customers travelling into the US.

This includes additional screening of all US-bound customers and hand luggage before they board their flights.

As a result customers will only be allowed to take one item of hand luggage onboard the aircraft. They are advised to check-in as normal.

Customers travelling to other destinations outside the United States are not affected.

Please check ba.com for further updates during the day.
So it looks like just one piece of hand baggage to the US for the time being.

However, a report from flyclub at T5 this morning says BAA aren't actually discriminating and are operating a blanket one bag policy, regardless of destination. So beware.

I would like to see a 'trial by frequent flyers' of those terrorists and failed terrorists who indirectly or directly inconvenience us by leading to tighter security measures.

I sincerely hope that whatever nuttiness comes out of this incident is limited purely to US flights and not the rest of the world.

For an read, the DL forum thread on the subject contains some remarkable posts.

What has the amount of hand luggage got to do with any of this? From the BBC reports the lunatic had the explosives strapped to his leg so one piece of hand luggage or ten would have had absolutely no effect!

Why do people never think things through these days? OK there might be a great idea but nobody seems prepared to say "Hang on a minute - what will happen if....?".

US-bound pax are being subject to secondary screening - i.e., a pat down and second search of hand luggage. More hand luggage = more to search = takes longer to search = delays. Limiting hand luggage should, in theory, limit the delays.

There is no doubt EL AL are very strict on security, but it took me over an hour to go through the checks at Tel Aviv. Mostly because there were so many passengers and so few staff.

People already complain about fast track being too slow - imagine if it took over an hour, whilst staff ask you stupid questions designed to frustrate and annoy you.

Air Canada have reacted to the news:

I imagine we need to wait and see whether BA is enforcing the no getting up or access to carry on for the last hour rule mentioned.
