Where to visit in Brazil
Hi all,
I've got a 10 day (2 weekends and the week between) trip planned for Brazil in late May to see some very distant relatives, but they'll be working during the week and I'm trying to decide the best place to visit during that time. I'm flying into Sao Paulo and the family is about 3 hours inland in SP state.
I have considered Rio, but am tempted to save it for the next trip and would do it with the family at an event time--either carnival or the olympics.
Does anyone have any suggestions for location(s) to spend a few days that aren't impossibly distant by bus or tough/super expensive to get to by air (which another US family member suggested I not try to do).
Thanks

I am from there and I have a few suggestions.
- take a bus North and visit the historic towns near Belo Horizonte: Ouro Preto, Mariana, Congonhas do Campo, etc.

- Sao Paulo State coast, although it may be a little cool in May
Ubatuba and the little villages South of Sao Sebastiao are more "picturesque", Guaruja and Santos are bigger.
- if you are willing to fly, Azul Airline (it has something to do with Jetblue) flies everywhere out of Campinas

Ilhabela, about 3hrs from Sao Paulo city.
Parati being another option.
Consider Florianopolis too but you need to take a short flight south.

The historic cities in Minas Gerais are certainly an alternative. They are called "historic" because they boomed in the 18th century when Gold was found and heavily mined there. These are smallish cities with a heavy Portuguese influence that tend to be very pleasant. Tiradentes has become somewhat fashionable.
If you are looking for nature I think Iguau may be an alternative, about 600mi/1000km from Sao Paulo but depending where you are in the countryside of the state it may be considerably closer.
Finally, I see that Rio is not in your plans but I would suggest having a look even if just for recon.
